Quote from: Que on May 12, 2024, 01:45:10 AMFor chamber music of Classical era Boccherini has become my frequent go-to...  :D I think that where he excelled in.

I recently did a comparative listening of Boccherini's six string trios opus 47:

Though Europa Galante and La Real Cámera are both my favourite ensembles in Boccherini, I kind of expected the energetic Fabio Biondi to end on top. But no, La Real Cámera takes it away in a subtle but expressive interpretation  with close rapport between the players. Biondi et al. are not as energetic as expected, on the contrary, and the ensemble playing sounds disjointed in comparison. The Germans on Audite offer no serious competition: conservative, dutiful playing.

Thanks Que - no need to change my collection!  ;D   Dave

Seems like Real Cámara recorded a lot more Boccherini, great, was totally unfamiliar with them and those recordings!

This one was my first Boccherini album (recommended by Dave Hurwitz). Absolutely lovely!

Sampling some of the other albums, I've taken a liking towards the string sextets. But I'm still learning and discovering this fantastic composer.

Because: I enjoyed Vol 1 and it's music I'd like to become more familiar with.

Released today. Karski Boccerini Quintets v 2. First impressions. It's a banger - this my sort of classical style string quintets. Boccherini makes me forget Mozart. The plangent harmonies, the introspective vibe, the sweet dissonance, the dialogues. Top tier music, as life enhancing as Haydn.

And there are minuets even better than the one in The Lady Killers.

Quartetto Boccherini - three vols on Testament - I managed to get hold of a terrible mp3 of Vol 1 but I can tell that this set is, not to mince words, essential. The performances are old fashioned I guess, but very engaging and eloquent to me at least; the tone of the quintet is stunning - did they record Mozart or Schubert, because if they did I want it NOW! And the music - well there's one piece on here, the largo from the quintet op 31/1, is a real heilige dankgesang avant la lettre. Quintetto Boccherini play it vulgarly in a way, they pull the listener's heartstrings, but my goodness, it's fun!

Discogs lists at least 6 LPs of Boccherini quintets, one LP of Cherubini, and the Schubert Quintet. The Schubert was for HMV.

None liberated from the vinyl as far as I can see.
