Cross-post from WAYLT, simply to restate the quality of these SQs.

I rate David Matthews very highly. His symphonies are excellent, but his SQs are also amongst my favourite British cycles.

Ohhh, nice. Thank you. I have enjoyed this cycle very much so far.

Having heard his symphonies, the natural step would be to listen to the string quartets which is a form I increasingly enjoy more and more.

I don't think you will be disappointed. The previous releases have been very worthwhile.

Just listened to the Vol 6 of the String Quartets. Nos. 8, 16, 17 are first rate, as fine as any of the previous ones we have heard.

Not sure about DMs SQ transcriptions (Bach, a prelude and fugue from the 48 in this case). Perhaps he does them for the Kreutzer Quartet to play as encores, but I can't see much point in them otherwise.

Agree with all you say. More time needed with these, because as much as I come to enjoy his SQs, they take a while to root. As for the Bach, I am less interested.

Still going... He's now equalled Robert Simpson's total. Should be great, so good that he's getting recorded almost as soon as he's completed the work.

What makes me wonder why the 10th was skipped. I don't know any recording of that symphony.

Just downloaded the new Symphony No.11 &c disk. The Symphony is the standout here, an extraordinary work, a 23 minute single movement work that is pure symphonic flow from beginning to end. And such beautiful textures and material (excellent use of the harp). One of the great symphonies I don't doubt.

Curious, because the back cover shows that the symphony lasts 19:50 min. It also appears on YouTube with the same length.

19:50 on Qobuz as well.  Perhaps calyptorhynchus eyes landed on the line below that.

According to AI, it was recorded for broadcast by the BBC.  I wish they weren't so stingy about making their recordings available, but I suppose there are legal encumbrances.

Listening to 11 now.  Reminds me of Koechlin.

I have a recording of No.10, will post a link later today.

Thanks for sharing! The volume is a little low in both files, but fortunately that is easy to fix.
