How did I miss this wonderful lady all my life? I just stumbled on a Lied von der Erde on youtube that makes her, IMHO, the best interpreter of the Abschied.

part I: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3hCCTRYcz0
part II: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsCdu09A9r0&feature=related
part III: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXU5HsdwoPk&feature=related

(couldn't find part IV, maybe it was not posted yet...beautiful visuals as well)

She REALLY knows what she is doing, has absolute control, can float the tones at will and then intensify according to the expression. Here's something about her:

excerpt:
"...Her Mahler was revered for its wonderful tone colours. The many characters of Des Knaben Wunderhorn, the heartbreaking 'Die zwei blauen Augen' or the mesmeric 'Abschied' of Das Lied von der Erde underline her affinity with the language and sentiments of this music. Surprising as it may seem, this is the first anthology ever to be showcase the artistry of this great musician."

"Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, one by one."
