A long time ago during the late 1980's there existed a limited forum and discussion site related to  classical music.  I don't recall the details. Computers were new then, and the Internet, as we now know it, did not yet exist.  There was this "spot" for want of a better term, in which I would communicate with other interested listeners, both professional and non professional contributors.I wrote write about the many classical works I had listened to over several decades.  For now, I as a newbie, I simply wanted to point out those composers whose works I listen to on a continual basis.  These are and have been over these many years the following: Sibelius (and those composers influence by his works influenced, most notably Moeran); Scriabin; Vaino Raitio; Arnold Bax; Debussy; Alexander Krein; Joseph Marx (Herbst Symphony); Rachmaninoff; Martinu; Florent Schmitt; plus others, to be sure.  I particularly like the music language developed during the early decades of the 20th century. My code name is schweitzeralan, and I would like to communicate and to share my interests with other enthusiasts.

The sharing and communicating about classical music will poss no problem on GMG at all.
Especially with such a list of composers.
Be welcome and contribute your thoughts and feelings.

Hello, Buckeye!  I did my undergrad work in Wooster, great little school!

Welcome, Schweitzeralan! I think you'll find there are many posters here who share an enthusiasm for several of the composers you mention. I myself love most of them, the ones I don't are simply unknown (yet) to me (Krein and Raitio). Joseph Marx's Piano Concerto is the only piece of his I know.

What do you think of composers like Delius, Korngold, Nielsen?

Greetings from Delft, The Netherlands.

Welcome schweitzeralan!

That site you referred to back in the '80's was probably known as a BBS. (Bulletin Board Service). They were usually privately owned, (many times out of someone's home), and they usually catered to a hobby or topic. They ranged from gardening to porn. There were thousands of them all over the U.S.

Todays' "forums" are very much like the old BBS's. They give you the same community "feel" that the old BBS's did.  8)

Welcome to GMG. (I am a newcomer myself!).  :)

Good to hear the name Raitio mentioned! Welcome!

Thanks to all who have replied to my introduction.  I'm sure there is considerable interest and knowledge here.  My question is this:  As there are several replies, how do I address or reply to each individual respondent?  Is this possible? I'm just a newbie, so please bear with me.  I saw the "reply" box at the end of the list of respondents. Thanks.

Welcome, Schweitzeralan!

Sibelius, Moeran, Scriabin, Bax, Debussy, Marx, Rachmaninov, Martinů, F. Schmitt; quite a luscious and eclectic list you got there. I'm not familiar with Raitio and Krein, though. Perhaps you could start new topics about them and offer some recommendations as you familiarize yourself with the technicalities of the forum's format.  8)

Hello, Buckeye!  I did my undergrad work in Wooster...

And I was born and raised just a few miles north of Wooster. Greetings from another Buckeye, Mr. Swiss. I too have a special interest in the early 20th century.

LOL -  ;D - sounds like you've been in a 'time warp' -  :)

I was borned in Toledo (i.e. Ohio, not Spain - we have a very international community here!) - welcome to the GMG Forum - hope that you'll enjoy; all 'musical interests' are served here -  ;D

Originally from Dayton, I spent 25 years in Toledo, now am in Columbus.   0:)

So "SchweitzerAlan" we expect you to be different (good different!) and live up to Ohio's originality, the only state that's high in the middle and round at both ends!   :o

So tell us how you discovered Joseph Marx and Krein and Raitio!

I was born and still reside in the rival state of West Virginia, but as a Mountaineer that loves the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, I extend the hand of fellowship to thee, O noble Buckeye. Some names in your list I'm not familiar with, which is certainly a good thing! I shall do what I can to rectify this...
