Is this a 'trick' question? What do you mean by 'Christian'?  And then, who are your favorite 'non-Christian' composers?  ;) ;D

Well, I don't know who my favorite composer is, at all, really, but they are probably Christian.  :P

My favorite atheist composer is probably Leoš Janáček, though Rimsky-Korsakov is right behind, and they are trailed by Richard Strauss and Dmitri Shostakovich. My favorite Jewish composer is George Gershwin, with Leonard Bernstein also in the running, along with others such as Gottschalk [Jewish father], Glass, Moszkowski, Szpilman and Wieniawski.* And the confused, conflicted Wikipedia page about Beethoven suggests that his religious beliefs are not clear-cut (or at least, they left the Wiki writers in a muddle!): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_van_Beethoven%27s_religious_beliefs

*Not to mention Simon & Garfunkel

My initial impression exactly. And in addition, living in Bergen, I am very aware of eg Griegs sceptisism towards organized religion and christianity, being labeled a christian composer would not have sat well with him! I wonder what the radical Chavez would have thought of that as well.

Christian: Orthodox, Protestant, Catholic, Christian Agnostic, etc.
My favorite non-Christian composers are Mendelssohn, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Mahler, Bloch, Meyerbeer, Ligeti, Offenbach, Halevy, Korngold and Schoenberg.  Glad believers in Yahveh.

I'd understand if the question is about "composers of Christian music". What do we know about a composer's religious belief? Some are clear but most are not. They may be Christian in the surface, but deep down we are only guessing. Besides, if we are talking music of the 19th century or before, then basically "Christian composer" means "composers who are not jews", doesn't it?

Well, after that rant, JS Bach it is.

Neither I nor Takemitsu were born back then. I can name a Muslem or a Taoist composer too if I wanted to. But come on, you know my point.

Maybe some composers of the Ancient Greece, praying for Zeus:

My favorite non-Christian composers are Mendelssohn [...]

Mendelssohn, although born in a Jewish family, was a devout Lutheran through his whole life, certainly much more of a Christian than Khachaturian.

...and that "Christian Agnostic" is a gem.  ;D

So this is about race again. Among your "Christian" composers are some who never went to church, and among your non-Christian, i.e. Jewish composers are a couple who converted to Christianity.

May I say that I am perturbed by the number of GMG-ers these days who have racial hangups they want to air on this board?

Christians are a race?

No, but if you look at the OPs lists, you'll find he's talking about race rather than religion.
