I've been enjoying this English labels site here: http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/index.html

I already have a few of their releases which are all excellent.

They are releasing titles by lesser known composers which look promising.

Gorgeous cover art.

Whats the view on this label and what are some of their best releases?

Hyperion is a major player on the market, not in volume, but in quality.
Honestly, it does not happen often with them that a recording is not good, most are winners.
I have no exact figures, but I guess that I have round and about 700 cd's from this label.
The works of Simpson are a major release, Purcell and Vivaldi vocal works, the romantic cello, and Violin, and Piano series, lots of baroque composers, etc, etc.
The list is to long to mention.
Tell me what you want, and I can probably tell you, if it is good or not! ;D

Hyperion is one of the best classical labels around.  As you note, they often focus on lesser-known composers, have great cover art, and usually the recording quality is excellent.  I have no idea how many Hyperion discs are in my collection, but it must be in the hundreds.  A few of my favorites:

Schnittke: Piano Quintet, Three Madrigals, Serenade, String Trio (Capricorn)

Ives: A Song for Anything (Gerald Finley/Stuart Drake)

Impressive, even for you Harry!  ;)

If I am not mistaken, I have only two Hyperion discs, "German 17th-Century Church Music" (The Parley of Instruments) and Locatelli's Violin Sonatas (Wallfisch, Tunnicliffe & Nicholson). I have heard (borrowed) some other discs (Hewitt's Bach, King's Monteverdi...)

On my wishlist are:

Fauré: Piano Quartets
Fauré: Piano Quintets
Knüpfer: Sacred Music
Kuhnau: Sacred Music
Locatelli: L'Arte Del Violino, Op. 3
Locatelli: Sonatas, Op 8
Villa-Lobos: Sacred Choral Music
Monteverdi: Vespers
Debussy/Fauré/Ravel: Piano Trios

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Thanks Harry and Bruce  :)

Yeah, proberly looking at the chamber music side of things from this label as, I think, this is an area that they excell.  :)

The new erato

Don't forget their cheap and superb reissue label, Helios. Try Hans Rotts symphony for an idea about where Mahler came from.

Also, pianist Marc-André Hamelin records for Hyperion.  Here is Hyperion's artist page for him, with his recordings.  Lately I am absolutely loving this CD:

Medtner: Forgotten Melodies I, II

And the double Dyad's also cheap and good.

So far I own these Hyperion titles:

They excel in all they do, make no mistake, their Orchestral recordings are on a top level in the recording industry.

SW - agree w/ the others, Hyperion is a wonderful label - I own 'dozens' of their CDs (not as many as Harry, though -  ;D) - not at home (on a short Memorial Day vacation to Atlanta-SC mountains) to check out specific recommendations, but the Romantic Piano Concerto series is outstanding.

I know that you live in NZ, but I've obtain many of my Hyperion CDs from BRO (Berkshire Record Outlet) - check their current Hyperion offerings HERE - an absolute 'steal' at these prices for those that deal w/ BRO -  :)

Just saw erato's comment on Helios, also excellent.

I triple-confirm the Shostakovich, too.  It's just great, plus, it comes with a rarity: Schedrin's Piano Concerto No. 2, which is a really wild ride.

Edit: just did a search on BRO, and they currently have 531 Hyperion titles!  :o

Really? The only reason why I keep that CD is the fascinating painting on the cover, but the music to me is a waste of time.

I have very little hyperion titles (2?), they're too expensive!

This Byrd box is outstanding. Highly recommended. There is also very informative booklet. (I try to put picture here, I´m not sure if I can make it)
