None of the above.  I will take the Four Last Songs, however, and maybe the Oboe Concerto.  Unless I can pack a steamer trunk full of CDs, in which case Till would be the first of those named above to go in.

I admire your terseness.:) I choose Tod und Verklärung, Eine Alpensinfonie, and (I can't believe I'm saying this) Sinfonia domestica. :o In my alternative-universe history of the world the SD sparks the proletarian revolution that takes over the world and makes V.I. Lenin, Jack London, and H.G.Wells masters of all. Or, 3 other guys.  :D

Certainly Don Quixote, along with Eine Alpensinfonie, Vier letzte Lieder, Salome, Burleske and, what the heck, Josephslegende and Sinfonia domestica.

Renfield

#4
Tod und Veklärung and Eine Alpensinfonie were two easy picks, and it was a close call with Zarathustra, but I'll have Don Juan as #3.

Yeah, 6 is pretty close to 3.  ;D

    Burleske is wonderful, a mini-concerto.0:)

Oh yes, three for my sunrises and three for my sunsets.

I'm not familiar with Byron Janis in Burleske, something to remember to do before I'm stranded. For me, Argerich is the clear choice.

Ditto, except my #3 is reversed. :) I gotta say thank you to the original creator, because the line-up means I may also be able to take Metamorphosen!

My three choices...with favorite recordings:

Tod und Verklärung - Szell/Cleveland

Also Sprach Zarathustra - Sinopoli/New York Phil

Eine Alpensinfonie - Previn/WP

But I'm listening to Sinfonia domestica right now...and damn, it's much better than its reputation. If we had four choices...

As of now:

Eine Alpensinfonie
Don Quixote
Ein Heldenleben

The only Strauss tone poem that I don't particularly enjoy immensely is Sinfonia domestica.

Tod und Verklärung - Szell/Cleveland

Sarge

That's my first choice, too, with Klemperer 2nd.

It should be sooooo bad, so why isn't it? Szell does this one very well, too. That's the one you're listening to, I think.

Here are my favorites:    :)

1. Death and Transfiguration

2. Don Quixote

3. Alpensinfonie

John Copeland

1. Tod und Veklärung - Toscanini
2. Zarathustra - Haitink - Royal Cgbw Orch (or was it Chicago?  Will have to look into it again.)
3. Metamrphosen - RSNO - Jarvi

A Straussian dreamscape.

I'm surprised to see Alpensinfonie with the most votes so far!  My guess is that if we had only one pick, instead of three, it wouldn't be the top choice.

My selections:

Ein Heldenleben (Reiner/CSO 1954)
Also sprach Zarathustra (Reiner/CSO 1954)
Tod und Verklärung (Horenstein/LSO 1970)

Ein Heldenleben - This is the one I'd take to a desert island and leave there. >:(

Yes, Szell. I also own Kempe/Dresden and Maazel/WP. I enjoyed it so much I may do a comparative listening of the three tomorrow.

So am I...really surprised. Maybe it's a result of M forever's advocacy. I would have thought the top three would be Till, Don Juan and Don Quixote, which are probably his three best.
