Quote from: Kalevala on October 30, 2024, 09:00:58 AMWell, according to Wiki, the first two were in Dodger Stadium, and the next three (including tonight) are in Yankee Stadium, then the next two would be in Dodger Stadium.

So, good on you!  :)

You never know, with all the revisions they have made the last few years.  :-[

Sorry your Bronx Bombers wouldn't get those last two games at home.  :(

One can always hope (and thank you).  As an aside I meant to joke with a friend of mine today:  "What?!  You couldn't hear all of the cheering/hand clapping last night?!  Maybe later.  He's still struggling to deal with flooded basement, etc.  It's getting better and he's taking advantage of his rented dumpster to get rid of "stuff".

Something that shocked me the other night:  two(?) fans ripping a baseball out of the glove of a Dodgers player.  I think that they both had Yankees attire on.  What the....?!  Perhaps I'm wrong and it was just one fan?  In any event, that fan is banned from tonight's game.  I personally think that it should go further than that.

One thing that made me chuckle:  the sign by someone in the front row saying "Freddie please STOP!"  😂

On a serious note, the cancer moment hit hard; everyone has had someone that they know and love effected by and possibly killed by cancer.  It brought me to tears.  You are not alone.  Glad that they raised more money to fight it.

Quote from: San Antone on October 27, 2024, 10:47:12 AMI have noticed, and don't enjoy, seeing ad after ad for betting apps during the games.  It is a marked increase in the last2-3 years and I can only hope that if enough concerned parents, spouses, and other family members, complain or raise their concerns publicly the FCC would get involved to tone it down.
I agree.  It's become bad too on the Tennis Channel.  Sometime within, I believe, the last year or so FanDuel has become a major(?) sponsor/advertiser of the channel.  The desks that the commentators sit at have FD signs across the front of them plus the commentators talk every so often about the odds for various players to win and how they are changing during the course of the match.

And a belated well done to the Dodgers and their fans.  They were the better team.

I am not sure if LA was inherently the better team, but they certainly executed fundamental baseball much better than the Yankees, who made too too many mental and physical errors.  LA is definitely far too good of a team to give them 6 outs in an inning.

That said, expecting NY to win four games in a row would have been a never done before event, and odds are they would have lost eventually.  If not the 5th, then the 6th or 7th game.

I would have preferred had they that lost playing their best.

I had no skin in the game, but I was hollering and whooping when the Yankees lost.

My team will likely never get to the World Series again (White Sox), so I tend to end up cheering for someone to lose (although, I like a lot of the Dodgers - Joe Kelly, Mookie, Ohtani Freddie, etc., as they are all good dudes).

Not to knock your kicks but I've never understood cheering for someone to lose. Oh well...

Congrats to Dodger fans. LA clearly had the best MLB club in 2024. Props.

I can't explain it either; it was an involuntary reaction, but it doesn't happen with every team.

I think it has to do with arrogance (as the Dallas Cowboys - NFL - are another team I "cheer" against).

I grew up in Dallas through the early 90s. We were definitely taught to hate the other NFC East teams, especially Washington and Philly. To this day, I struggle to cheer for those two teams even though I don't follow the Cowboys anymore really.  :-[

(I was too young during the Cowboys/Steelers rivalry, so I escaped learning to hate them.)

The only team I was raised to hate with the Cubs, but I never did, as they sucked as much as the White Sox, although, their fans are lame with the "curses".

It is a pretty Chicago thing to not like the Yankees, or New York in general, as it is the city of broad shoulders, city of the blue collars, the second city. ;D

Some years ago (2010, maybe?), my dad and brothers and I did a week of Midwest baseball games. We did Cubs, White Sox, Brewers, and Twins. Lots of fun!

We were staying in Wrigleyville for the Chicago leg of the tour, and our first night there was the night the Blackhawks won the Cup. People were shouting and partying in the streets right outside our room practically until dawn. It was crazy!

Oh, well, in that case I can totally understand. "America's Team" can stick up their ***. That kind of presumption and arrogance begs animosity.  ;D

The thing is, maybe certain fans exude some arrogance, but the team and organization (aside from George Steinbrenner) display a proesinalism and humility not found on many other teams.  Taking Aaron Judge as an example, and he is the captain, when he hits a home run (and he hits a lot) he doesn't make a big deal, no bat flip, no showing up the pitcher, just trotting around the bases.  Most of the Yankee players are also professional in this way.

This kind of team culture has been long-standing, and not by accident - it comes from the top: the restrictions on facial hair, length of hair, minimal jewelry, and uniform modesty (no names on the back - and the same uniform for decades).

Yes, there have been some players who did not personify this attitude, Reggie Jackson, Jason Giambi, and a few others .  But by and large the Yankees are nothing like many teams in the league, e.g. the San Diego Padres.

All of this has appealed to me since I was in little league myself.

The backlash is based entirely on the fact that the Yankees have won more than any other team, and historically had the most legendary players, and has often spent more liberally than other teams (although in the recent history they are not unique in this regard).

This year, their playing was sloppy, and it finally caught up with them in one inning in the 5th game, which they lost, a game they had every expectation to win.

Yeah, the last time the Cowboys mattered I wasn't even a teenager, lol. ;D

@San Antone post is a perfect encapsulation of why I loathe the Yankees. You hate them because they are winners, lol - the height of delusion.

I was in high school and college in Texas when they won three Super Bowls in four years.  ;)

So enlighten me.  Why are the Yankees hated?

Keep in mind this is a team which has fans all over the world, and whenever they are on the road, those games have increased attendance. Also, some of the players people treasure, both because they are lovable rascals (Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, Lou Pinella)) and the opposite, humble stars, (Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter, and now Aaron Judge) - and all of these players are are among the best.

My question, is why would anyone "hate" this kind of team?

NumberSix

Yankees haven't really been a dynasty in two decades, and their last appearance in the World Series was 15 years ago. But people still get bitter because backlash always occurs against the team that wins over and over.

Also, New York as a people/culture is seen as arrogant and looking down on everybody else.

Not saying any of those things are the correct way to be. Just my opinion about why a lot of people don't like them. Of course there's also the idea that they're not lovable Rascals like the Oakland A's from the 1970s were, for instance. Or the 1993 Phillies or any number of other such teams.

@NumberSix covers it well, but your bias is obvious. Who would call either Billy or Lou loveable or rascals? They were both, at best, petulant children, and, at worst, abject assholes.

Joe humble? Jeter humble? I think you and I may own different dictionaries.

NumberSix

Jeter has a reputation for being a good guy.

Joe D, despite some stories we hear from his private life, knew how to work a crowd. It's one of the reasons he was more beloved at the time than Ted Williams - Ted refused to play the game with the fans and the press, and it cost him some love, I think.

How can you not be romantic about baseball? I love talking about the history of the game.  :)
