which of these tchaikovsky sym 4 have you heard and prefer?  (all with the cso)

kubelik
solti
barenboim
abbado

Iago

I've heard em' all, and I prefer NONE OF THEM.

Try Monteux/Boston Symphony on RCA.
"Good", is NOT good enough, when "better" is expected

Brian

I've only heard the Solti - but haven't listened to it in years. Sry  :( ;)

I have the cycle w/ Abbado on Sony. I like it well enough. Haven't expanded out to other recordings.

I would go for the Barenboim, though caveat that I haven't heard Abbado's 4th (have heard the others from his cycle) and haven't heard Kubelik (didn't know that exists!). Barenboim has more color and an incredible way of pacing the drama. Alex Klein's oboe solos are to die for. You can catch a video of the entire 4th with Barenboim from Carnegie Hall opening night 1997 (around the time when the Teldec CD was recorded) on youtube.
