As mentioned in a previous thread, I now regret not forking out for this box set and have only now got recourse to what's available on streaming media.

Included in the box set is the famous 'Historic Return to Carnegie Hall' concert from May 9 1965. Also available are two rehearsals performed by Horowitz on April 7 and April 14. These are fully recorded and the program is what VH intended to play on May 9 (which he did). The rehearsals were pivotal for him. If they went well he would return, if not then he would delay.

The April 14 rehearsal is a stunning piece of music making and superbly recorded. The April 7 is only just behind it. Listening to April 14 and then the concert on May 9 with a packed house I think he plays better in the rehearsal. The sound quality in the May concert is not quite as good but a full audience would soak up some areas of sound. The interpretations are very similar across all three 'concerts'

Has anyone else who either has the set or has heard it via streaming media got any comments. It certainly shows what Horowitz the pianist was capable of, especially 'live'.
Cheers

See what you think of the Kreisleriana November 28 1968.
