Hi.

I'm starting to reasearch to area of festivals of contemporary music. Here's link where are listed festivals throughout europe.

But there are so many. So, if anyone here is more familiar with these festivals, which are more important, interesting than others.

Thanks for posting that!  It looks like a pretty comprehensive list, and I've bookmarked it.

We've got one too here in Winnipeg every year "The New Music Festival", runs for a week-long around the end of January/beginning of February, with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

As for Poland, Warsaw Autumn is listed, and that's certainly the most important contemporary music festival over here. In its heyday it was probably the most important contemporary music festival in Eastern and Central Europe (perhaps depending a bit on how exactly you understand "Central" Europe; or perhaps not). Right now, it's a bit more difficult to assess its position. But it certainly is still somewhere near the top for the region.

There are a few less important ones missing, as well as some festivals which aren't (strictly speaking) contemporary music festivals. I'm thinking mainly of Wratislavia Cantans. It always features very important world premieres but it definitely can't be called a contemporary music festival.

Uh-oh, have to run now. I'll get back to you about the others later.

Probably there should be lots of festival in Germany and Austria, but I haven't found them yet.

Where's the BR "Musica Viva" Series/Festival? Since 1947--founded by Hartmann--one of the most important there is.

Ars Musica Brussels is 20 years old , so the festival has spread its wings and has also concerts in Bruges, Liège, Antwerp ,Ghent and Mons (= Flemish Bergen).

Ligeti, Hugues Dufourt and Henri Pousseur get special attention. But there are many premieres and works by very young composers.
the festival starts in a rather sad atmosphere for henri Pousseur died last friday. His health was frail. Sevaral large scale works from the late 1950-ies and early 1960ies are programmed.

Ars Musica works in co operation with Musica Strasbourg ( September/October 2009) and the Wittener Musiktage.

orange, when are you going to post the results of further research? are you going to look for festivals in the American continent, too? In Asia and Oceania?

Oh, and some of the links on that list are broken.

There is one festival in France that I know about that isn't on the original list you sent. The huge and almost forty year old festival in Bourges, the Synthese festival of electroacoustic music. This festival (along with the competitions) single-handedly presented music from South America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and Oceania at times when those countries were actively discouraging such activities.

A couple of others seem to be not happening this year, which would be a great pity. I'll name them anyway, just in case. The Futura festival happens in Crest in August, usually. As does the Spectrum XXI festival in Paris and elsewhere in November. Fingers crossed.

I didn't plan to research other continets, but very interesting idea, though.
Here's another link, it doesn't seem like a festival, but some "organization" in Moscow. Anyway, It's about promoting Russian contemporary music.

If you click on the Geography, there's a list of festivals where they attended. There's also listed festival in Armenia.

Sorry it took me so long to get back here. 0:)

Warszawskie Spotkania Muzyczne - Muzyka Dawna, Muzyka Nowa (Warsaw Musical Meetings? Warsaw Musical Encounters? - Early Music, New Music) is a really nice local festival (one of my favorites) built around the idea of uniting lovers of new music and early music

PROBALTICA - a festival devoted to music (old and new) of the Baltic countries

Ogrody Muzyczne (Musical Gardens) - another one of those Warsaw festivals which conjure warm feelings in me, even if it is one of a rather local impact

Musica Polonica Nova - a nice Polish contemporary music festival in Wroclaw

Musica Sacra - a sacred music festival with a competition for composers

International Polish Composers Festival (is that an oxymoron?)

The Festival of Premieres in Katowice

The Polish Music Festival in Cracow

Cracow Composers' Music Days

I've left out many of the even more specific festivals, such as electronic music festivals, percussion festivals, double bass festivals, multimedia festivals (Audio Art!) and the like. BTW, the Polish Music Information Center keeps a database of music festivals in Poland here.
