:D Yabba dabba doo!

This is an odd one, isn't it? A classical EP: four short pieces, nine minutes total playing time. Don't believe I've ever seen such a thing.

Back in the 1960s my brother had some classical 45 rpm discs. I don't know where he got them from, possibly they were bonus discs from Reader's Digest. I can vaguely remember one of them being David Oistrakh playing Bach and another was Haydn. I think they all contained complete works although, obviously, fairly short ones.

I have a number of classical 45 rpm discs in my collection. Some are complete works and some are extracts from larger works.

This must be the third or fourth time the Borodins record the Shostakovich quartets, except that I can't imagine any of the original members from the 1960s are still around. Certainly their first traversal (the first 13 quartets only) is a classic set, not to speak of their fabulous 1962 recording of quartets 4 and 8 done with the help of the Mercury Living Presence recording truck brought over to the USSR from the US.

Their style has changed pretty significantly from the two earlier sets, so this wouldn't necessarily be an automatic buy for fans of the Dubinsky/Kopelman interpretations. That said Shostakovich is still the highlight of their repertoire (I heard a fabulous No.9 from them last week, the best item on the programme) and it may be less "authentic" but I honestly probably prefer their current interpretive style to their past ones.

A few more items which I don't think have been posted here yet (apologies if that is not the case):

Look out in October for a new release on Northern Flowers: the world premiere of a newly discovered (2016) Cello Concertino by Mieczyslaw Weinberg, paired with the 24 preludes for solo cello. Marina Tarasova, cello; Musica Viva Chamber Orchestra with Alexander Rudin.

Note this is not the short Fantasia for cello and orchestra on Chandos, nor the full (masterpiece) concerto.

A new recording by the young violinist Sayaka Shoji playing the violin concertos by Beethoven and Sibelius.
Termirkanov leading a Russian orchestra - Released by DG.
I heard the Beethoven on Spotify today. It was a good old school romantic kind of thing.

Whatever the musical value of this disc - a pretty dumb cover pic..... subtitled "and then I woke up and there I was ..... in a forest ..... holding a violin..... I have NO idea why I'm here"

You think that's bad? ...

No comparison. She clearly knows what she's doing with a violin.
I am now working on a discography of the works of Vagn Holmboe. Please visit and also contribute!

Pizzicato?

(FTR I can't decide which photo is less candid. But her lack of a bow does jump out at me.)

An intriguing assemblage: symphony no 3, 6 Schubert songs orchestrated by Brahms, 6 Hungarian Dances orchestrated by Dausgaard, and the Alto Rhapsody. Presto Classical has sound bites and they reveal some startling features, such as the attacks and phrasing in the symphony, and a decidedly unusual sound world in the Dances.

If you have www.Spotify.com you can hear the new Brahms CD by Dausgaard from beginning to end here:

Two other Brahms symphonies conducted by Dausgaard were released by Bis:

An earlier recording of the first  Brahms symphony by Dausgaard on DVD is this one - ++ Dvorak 9, Sibelius 5 and Nielsen 3.: (I love this one - although I haven't gotten into Sibelius yet):

I've just seen that Leif Segerstam's 6 albums of Sibelius for Naxos have been packaged together in a box, apparently released this month.

Which, given that I've just reached the conclusion I probably want most of them and wouldn't mind any of them, is a rather happy accident of timing.

Huge temptation, and I'm supposed to be on austerity. Samples sound terrific. I think I'll be able to restrain myself until he finishes the cycle.
