So I'm up to three more cycles I must buy this year.

Need more.
Daniel Barenboim might be willing to go for five.

I'm down with that.

I'd also love to see some radio archive surprise releases from any pianist other than Glenn Gould.

Think we could put together a GoFundMe for someone to find the Riefling tapes?

Perhaps.  Or maybe a concerted email/letter campaign to whichever company currently owns the Valois catalog.

That would be the Naïve label AFAIK.

Todd

So then Believe Digital may own the old Valois recordings.  Maybe a quick email to Denis is warranted.

Yep, Auvidis purchased Valois, then Naïve took over Auvidis, and then Believe rescued Naïve. So Denis Ladegaillerie would be your man. Good luck!

Brian

Might as well ask about the 14 Haydn sonatas he recorded for Valois, also...  ;)

The bass only sings in every movement.  No reason to mention him on the cover.  ::)

Could be worse - Pentatone has recently stopped putting any artists' names on the cover.

Ear candy at least, probably much more than that.

Fair point. It's Vitaly Gromadsky - he gets a mention on the back cover.

This arrived recently, and looking forward to hearing it soon. It's the sixth installment in the Minnesota Orchestra's Mahler cycle, and if it's similar to the others, Osmo Vänskä and these superb musicians are having a formidable impact.

Hurwitz thinks that's the best in their cycle so far, fyi. "He secures excellent playing from the orchestra, and concentrates his attention on ensuring lively rhythms and an impressive degree of textural transparency, all to the benefit of Mahler's extraordinary orchestration."
