Hurwitz thinks that's the best in their cycle so far, fyi. "He secures excellent playing from the orchestra, and concentrates his attention on ensuring lively rhythms and an impressive degree of textural transparency, all to the benefit of Mahler's extraordinary orchestration."

(Well, what do you know...Hurwitz and I might actually agree on something.  ;D )

Seriously, "best so far" is saying something. The previous recordings in the cycle (haven't heard all of them) have been magnificent.

Mr. Paik is becoming quite prolific.

A double album. Not listed in US Amazon, for some reason.
It's all good...

Ear candy at least, probably much more than that.

This has caught my attention, and normally I wouldn't bother with this stuff, I'd have thought anyone interested in the music will find a lot of stimulating things going on on these performances, it's one of the best recordings of the year so far IMO.

For Todd's Christmas list:

"Schubert: 12 Great Sonatas"
Daniel-Ben Pienaar
Avie

Some box sets potentially for the Christmas lists of others:
- Naxos complete Villa-Lobos symphonies
- Brautigam HIP complete Mozart concertos (BIS)
- Charles Mackerras/Scottish Chamber Orch complete recordings on Linn

Also I find this cover portrait hilarious:

Finally, there's a premiere recording of a new critical edition of the Gershwin Piano Concerto which purports to be based solely on Gershwin's own notes, without any of the outsider tweaks and edits that appeared as the piece moved to performance and publication. Editor Timothy Freeze claims the result is "less romantic." On a Naxos disc with Tower, Harbison, and Piston rarities. The same critical edition, btw, has a version of An American in Paris with 100 additional bars of music. Wonder when that will get recorded.

Hilarious or not (it is), I need it. I have all the other volumes in the (hopefully ongoing) series.

Like I'll wait until Christmas.  And new Paik, too.  And new LvB cycles.  Lots of piano listening coming up.

At the very least it includes some excessively excellent Mozart.

It looks like he's saying " why are you making me play this?"

Scion7

that's horrible - who at Chandos marketing approved that??
When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."

The Podger/Cooper is a reissue, right?

The Podger/Cooper box and the Alstaedt Shostakovich/Weinberg have been out for a while, even years. I own the Alstaedt - it's probably the best stereo recording of the Weinberg concerto so far, and has a nice little surprise slice of Lutoslawski. Everyone who records Weinberg now is welcome, since it's such a great piece; everyone is also competing with the live Rostropovich recording from the USSR. But Altstaedt is darn good, I think a tad faster and more personality-ful than Gunnarsson on Chandos.

Yes, it is a reissue.
I've had it for some years - it is my favorite period recording of Mozart's violin sonatas.

Cut Circle has delivered some excellent Franco-Flemish recordings before, so I'll definitely try this!  :)

This planned release of two anonymous 15th c masses looks interesting as well:
