Deleted?

Ooops. I guess it's back from the dead. It was deleted really soon after its original release, though.

I hope it ends up being more interesting than his first cycle with RCO, which was boring and was quickly deleted from the catalog.

There's nothing I've heard in recent Chailly, live or on record, that suggests even remotely that he's the bland-meister from yesteryear. He's darkened and matured, like a great wine that had superficial beauty first, and only now reveals unfathomed depth. I call it the "reverse Mehta", he's pulled. And the Leipzigers... what a sound! I mean... RCO: "what a sound!" of course. But Leipzig is really "what a sound!"  ;)

Well, in all fairness, there were moments of greatness before, like a few early issues in his Bruckner cycle with the RSO Berlin, like the 7th. And his RCO Mahler cycle is great. There was nothing bland about his appearances with the RCO that I heard in NY on tour in the late 90s and early 2000s.

I recently had the honour of being involved as a chorus member in several performances Mendelssohn's Lobgesang with Chailly and the RCO. Very special concerts, as it was the first time in 9 years that he was back in Amsterdam. Absolutely nothing bland about them. A couple of nights were recorded, so hopefully we'll see a release on the RCO's house label sometime in the future!

It is a very long time since i had similar experiences with the conductor when i was in the Edinburgh Festival Chorus. We encountered a lot of famous musicians and even 30 years ago, each of Chailly's performances was a special occasion and a stand-out of each festival.

This might be oldish news, but it's nice to see two new editions of the "old school" Fritz Werner Bach recordings from Erato being issued by Warner, a 20cd set of his cantatas, and another 10cd of sacred works including motets.  I only know half the cantatas from one of the two old boxes, but I think I like them enough to try everything else.

I do not see Amazon US/UK listing yet, but here are MDT pages:
1. Cantatas (20cd)
2. Passions, motets, etc.

Thanks Nav; holy cat is that cheap.  I think from Amazon UK it might come to around ~$24 including shipping for that 10cd, if I were to order a few things.  Execrable tagging, though!

I think it's probably his second recording of the Goldbergs (1999) included in the Brilliant Bach Edition.

In rummaging around Amazon and Presto,  I hadn't seen any mention of a BV988 from him, so I thought it might be a new release.   When and for him did he do his first recording?

Belder is Brilliant's in-house Bach harpsichordist, so what are the chances that he's getting to 988 just now? :) Per Bach-Cantatas, his first recording is from '91 (for a label called Erasmus).

This is the one he made for Brilliant in '99 which was mentioned by Eric.

I don't have that version, but it was recorded in the early 90s on "Erasmus". The same label of his first WTC.

P.S.: Nav has done a more accurate work.  :)

Thanks Nav; I'm ordering it off the AmazonUS Marketplace, since it contains a whole second disc of Belder's Bach,  against the re-release that contain three versions of the GVs I'm not hepped up about.  And it frees up my Presto shopping cart for something else :)

IMO, it's a smart decision, Jeffrey. That second disc contains one of the best versions of the Italian Concerto (and the French Overture) that I have heard.  :)

This is too tempting.....
http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Decca/4807682

I keep telling myself that I can't afford that now,  too many bills coming due this month....yeah, that never stopped me before.

This one has the Eighth that Jens loves head over heels.

One that I've not seen mentioned here:

[asin]B00BWE3HGM[/asin]
Janet Baker: ANNIVERSARY EDITION (EMI, 20cd)

Hype:
QuoteAfter having established her reputation for all time by singing 'The Angel' in Elgar's Dream of Gerontius with Sir John Barbirolli in 1964, Dame Janet Baker became the mezzo-soprano of choice for numerous conductors, bringing to each performance her incisive musicality, clear diction and natural warmth of tone that endeared her to audiences all over the world. Her range was enormous - from Monteverdi through to 20th century composers, particularly Britten.

EMI is fortunate that it was able to capture so much of her unimpeachable artistic legacy and, although many classic recordings have been available on CD before, nearly 25% of the collection is new to this medium including her Monteverdi and Scarlatti with Leppard, two concerts of duets with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and many of her recordings of English and French songs. Indeed this collection is a fitting tribute to a remarkable talent who will shortly celebrate her 80th birthday.

That Eighth is available for around $20 from Amazon MP.  Despite the usual consistency in Jens's and my tastes, it hasn't wowed me yet, but then I'm not a big fan of the 8th. (Maybe I'm due for another listen.) Do you already have Nagano's? And Gielen's? Abbado's? MTT's? Bernstein's?

As for the rest ... well, they're on Mog now (8th, too) so you can hear for yourself first before shelling out $ you can't afford (or which might be better spent elsewhere). ;)
