Just a boxing-up, but:

[asin]B00E3ISIAO[/asin]
Gesualdo: THE COMPLETE MADRIGALS (Marco Longhini w/Delicious Musicians - Naxos, 7cd)
Out in a few days in USA, already out elsewhere.

I need to research the quality of the performances, though I've heard a few of Longhini's Monteverdi recordings and thought they were the bees' knees.

From bits I've heard the quality of the performance is very fine. The only question, for me, is whether I want an all-male ensemble in madrigals. It's probably just a question of getting used to the sound, but to me still sounds weird. Also, does the box include all texts and translations?

Anyhow, for the quick ones pre-order from amazon.ca is 17 CDN$, but just for a day or two more.

It sounds weird to me as well. Also, the interplay seems too loosely knitted, loosing impetus.

I also sampled the Kassiopeia Quintet (Globe), recently issued as a box set. Honestly, apart from the too spacious acoustics, they sound sooo Dutch and would have been better off performing Sweelinck or the like...But it is too late for that now - the Gesualdo (!) Consort already beat them to the post.. 8).

I have Book V by La Venexiana (Glossa), and that still strikes me as perfect. :)

No doubt, that's a very important question, also valid for their recordings of the complete madrigals by Monteverdi available on Naxos too.

Thanks everyone for the input on Gesualdo madrigals.

I did not see mention of this, recently: Brilliant seems to be re-reissuing its comprehensive Shostakovich box.  This one looks very similar, maybe identical to the last one from ~1-2 years ago, except it is 49 discs instead of 51.  I glanced quickly through the contents but did not immediately see any big changes.  I wondered if Rostropovich's LADY MACBETH would have been removed post-EMI buyout by Warner; but no...it is still there.  Almost seems like something was removed?
It is probably academic for me to bring this up, as I don't think I will be springing for the box.  But maybe those who have been on the fence would want to get the old one before it disappears?

ASIN: B00DUPU6LA  [not listed at Amazon US yet]

Here are the contents of the new box. (Listed legibly at the Brilliant website....at last!)

(Listed legibly at the Brilliant website....at last!)
http://www.brilliantclassics.com/release.aspx?id=FM00081647#

It's also at Berkshire for a slightly lower price than at Amazon (51 disc version). The sets are exactly the same except for the last three discs, which are historical recordings. The first set has 3 discs of those, while the newer one has just 1 disc. Here are the back covers side by side

Haha, yes that's pretty clear-cut, isn't it?  <lazy emoticon>
Thanks for mentioning the BRO availability.  I have an itch to get it, though it's the usual overlap/extraneity dread that stays the hand.  I.e. already having the Barshai symphs, not sure about the Rubio quartets, thinking about getting other editions/recordings of other items, etc.

This, just so nobody misses it, a "new" reissue of the Schmidt/LSO recordings of the Nielsen symphonies, praised recently by Jens and others?  Now (again) in a single set.

What percentage of that BBC LEGENDS box comes highly recommended?  I am pleased that I only own the Shostakovich 8 by Mravinsky, which is still available cheap (as a 2cd with a little Mozart in tow).

My #1 Scheherazade coupled to my #1 Poeme. Just a totally badass CD.

For my fellow Sudbin enthusiasts

On this recording, Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto will be coupled with Mozart's K491 Concerto in C minor, with cadenzas composed by Yevgeny Sudbin.

Sample clip of the Mozart.

One of the worst pianisms I've heard in years...

Can you explain precisely what makes this performance dreadful?

To ask a question which may or may not be the answer to Cato's--

Is this the performance with the atrociously non Mozartean candenza you were talking about the other day.

Note bene:
for those like me who don't want to wait "2 to 4 weeks" for AmazonCA to ship this,  Arkivmusic has put this as one of their Weekend Specials for $29.99 US (meaning through midnight Sunday)

That one does look intriguing!  :) I still have Herreweghe' accounts from quite some years ago, which are nice BTW.

But it would be interesting to hear a new take. Recordings are relatively few in these works.

Haven't heard the Herreweghe.  The individual discs in this set all have received glowing reviews. . .

Q, I was so excited for this that I actually pre-ordered on amazon (a first for me).

I own Herreweghe too, but for some reason I'm coming back more usually for Junghänel than Herreweghe.

Unfortunately, the price of Junghänel's set has gone wild lately:

About Pygmalion: A friend of mine, very reliable on musical matters, has talked very highly of these recordings. Apparently big-chorus style with amazing vocal precision.

Just listened to samples of Junghänel - must have totally flown under my radar! :) Which is a damn pity considering the price surge... :-\

But thanks for pointing it out put to me, might find it somewhere. :)

Regarding Pygmalion, I hesitate if big chorus-style would be suitable in these works.
