Today, I attended a baby's one month birthday celebration. As customary all the male were handed a smoke and you have to light up (not that you have to smoke it). So I did light up. I inhaled slightly and it did not taste good at all. I let it burn itself out. That was that. What I found out is that the detox has been very successful. I had no desire to actually smoke that cigarrette and it did not taste good to me at all.

Five days now. I am giving myself a high five!

Great, Paul.  If you ever do get tempted with the thought that a cigarette would taste good, pick up an ashtray (in use) and take a deep sniff of it.  If that doesn't cure you of the crazy thought, then lick it.  I swear it will be awhile before you think a cigarette would taste good again!

I believe it's been a week. Are we celebrating, springrite?

Oh, yes! It's been one week and everyone is going well. No celebration per se, but I decided to stay an extra day in scenic Xiamen on Sunday, after my Saturday lecture. I have never been to that beautiful city before, so that extra day will be like a treat.

Oh, I also bought a few DVDs today as a treat, including Love for Three Oranges, Kremer playing Alban Berg Concerto and Aerosmith!

An obvious side effect of quiting smoking is that I am hungry all the time. Nicotine is an appitite supressant, without which I do feel hungry. But since I have gout, I can not eat all the fattening goodies like meat and seafood, etc., I try to eat some not-too-unhealthy fillers from time to time, such as whole wheat crackers, etc. I have lost about 10 lbs (4.5 kg) since I was diagnosed with gout 6 months ago. One week after quiting smoking, my weight has not gone up. This is good. I will allow myself as much as 10lbs weight gain in the next year if that is what it takes. But it seems that because of my gout diet (I control it with diet alone without ANY drugs), I do not expect to gain that much, if at all.

I am hungry again. I bought some cheese. Think I will go munch on some...

Yep. I was a skinny s.o.b. before I quit smoking.  ;D

Gout? What's that? I mean, I've heard of it...

Keep your tank topped up with water, Paul.  Start the day with a couple of glasses full and keep it up throughout the day.  Drinking lots of water is good for you anyway and it suppresses cravings for both food and cigarettes.  You already have it whipped--just keep reprogramming your self identity as a non-smoker and don't ever give in to the temptation to have so much as one little puff.  As you begin to breathe better, have fewer headaches, enjoy the taste of food more, have more stamina and energy, smell better, etc., the real rewards of living smoke-free will overwhelm the phony cost of giving up that jolt of drug you once needed to feel well.

Gout? What's that? I mean, I've heard of it...

Gout, an inability to breakdown purine in digesting food, so one has to avoid food high in purine. That means:

No seafood; No meat except chicken, and very small amount of very lean beef or pork. Also, no beans of any kind (including string beans, green beans, bean sprouts, toufu, bean paste, etc.), no nuts, no alcohol...

Well, basically, if it tastes reasonably good, it is probably off limit. The good thing is it saves a lot of money. Once someone took me to dinner and wanted to treat me for helping his daughter overcome her depression. But the restaurant is too high class and the food is just too good. I mean, after reading the menu 3 times, I identified ONE item that I can eat. So I had ONE baked potato, without the stuffings or gravy.

With gout coupled with quiting smoking, it now costs my family almost nothing for my upkeep.

This past week, I experienced some difficulties. It is because I suffered from heat strokes and was incapacitated for about 5 days. I felt miserable, hungry most of the time but felt sick and couldn't hold down the food when I do eat. How's that for between a rock and a hard place? Well, it is at this time that I really missed my ciggy. I did smoke a couple of times as temporary relief. The smoke did not taste particularly good but I felt better.

Today I feel mostly recovered. This is the first day in 5 in Beijing under 36, or air temp below body temp. Here's to better weather.

Glad you're feeling better, Paul. Take good care.
