Time for some name dropping on HIP violinists.... 8)

Very fine version of the Palatine sonatas with the ethereal sound of tangent piano for the keyboard part.

I have the following CD's by Anton steck, a very talented violinist ...

And his repertory is certainly not limited to the Baroque - he plays first fiddle at the Schuppanzigh Quartett and is often the concertmaster of Concerto Köln.  His solo recordings of Classical and Romantic music are still too few in number, alas.
HIP for all and all for HIP! Harpsichord for Bach, fortepiano for Beethoven and pianoforte for Brahms!

It's her violin that had to retire; her hips look ok.  :)

Q & Others - I have & enjoy a number of recordings by the violinist mentioned - kind of a look of a 'better fed' Paganini;) :D

The most recent acquisitions of this genre in my collection are the recent recordings of Viktoria Mullova:)

I'm warming up to HIP for some reason...

My favourite is G Carmignola and also Rainer Kussmaul of the Berlin Baroque Soloists.

By the way, how is the Vivaldi Double Concertos CD with Mullova on Archiv please?

Sensational disc - the two perform beautifully together w/o one being dominant; Vivaldi's writing for the two instruments is fabulous w/ delightful interchanges - apparently these works just do not receive their due and are not much recorded - my first hearing (although I have a LOT of Vivaldi) - MusicWeb Review HERE, if interested.  :D

Sigiswald Kuijken springs to mind immediately.  A very skilled period violinist.

I'm also quite fond of Andrew Manze's work.

Monica Huggett has certainly left her mark on the period performance world as well.

I see Carmignola has been noted above.  Traverso, I believe you were Masolino in another incarnation, no?  ;) Thanks for introducing him to me via his album with Abbado and the Orchestra Mozart!  :)

I like ALL your choices, Sorin. A couple that I would add to the list )maybe even nearer the top) are Fabio Biondi, some of his recordings are simply fabulous, and the tragically underrated Vera Beths, I suspect that in her case, since she is primarily an ensemble player rather than a virtuoso soloist, people will tend to underrate her automatically. But the world needs ensemble players too, and she is one of the best. :)

Yes you are right.  M=T  But it's all just names, even screen names at that.

Compared to Carmignola, John Holloway may have been an "older hand" in the HIP business (his Biber and Schmelzer discs are next to none) and yet he doesn't seem to be mentioned as such.

Another often forgotten name among HIP violinists is Manfredo Kraemer, who also performs spectacularly in seventeenth-century repertories.

Ryo Terakado - quite possibly the best Baroque violinist in his part of the world.

Most recently heard in a solo album where he performs Bach's "Cello" suites on a violoncello da spalla

Any particular recordings in mind? :)

I know he did the Bach solo Sonatas & Partitas on Flora.

I think there will be a swell of interest into the HIP movement.

OK guys, I think three pictures of this lovely girl's bare buttocks wil be sufficient to breathe life into the interest for HIP on this forum... 8)

You're a well-mannered person, Gurn. And you are totally right: Ensemble players and second violins are usually forgotten.

The first name in my mind is Sigiswald, then John Holloway, but both have been mentioned. Then I will go for Mrs. Elizabeth Wallfisch. I love this woman.  :)
