Then still following your advise, I wrote an email to Mr. Bergman, considering the time difference, he got it while he probably was asleep. I look foreward to hear from him tomorrow!

Yes, that was the idea!
I hope you'll hear something worthwhile and will be able to buy them!

Greetings,
Marc

wineklwagen = shopping cart, literally.

Thank you, Herman!   :-*

The wagen was easy, same in German, it was the 'Winkel' causing the difficulty:

"Winkelwagen is leeg "

::)

Welcome to GMG, Undutchable! Looking forward to many stimulating exchanges of ideas and opinions!

You mention a christmas matinee box set; is this the same 12 disc set Mahler The Symphonies, Philips442 050-2 we have discussed?  :)

Thanks Brunnhilde :)
Yes, Kerstmatinees is the one, but mine is the one above in the picture, 9 discs. The number is Philips 464 321-2.

----------------
Now playing: Brahms, Johannes - 1. Un Poco Sostenuto - Allegro
via FoxyTunes

Kerstmatinee = Christmas Matinee.
This pic belongs to the CD box set, released in the nineties.
A couple of years ago the television broadcasts were also released. Same performances, but both sound & vision!
In my first posting about the Xmas set, I was referring to the DVD set. If you want to buy them (and succeed in doing that), I think you will find that the DVD's will be cheaper than the CD set!

How is that for a reply? Jubilation!

"Dear Mrs. XXXXXX  (my deletion)

In view of your enthusiastic and friendly email, how could we refuse to deliver to you...?

The problem is that we do not have any stock of these at the moment.

It was a limited edition for the Dutch market.

However, I will ask whether there are a few left at the distibutor.

I will let you know at the end of next week if we can obtain one for you.

Best wishes,

Lucas

I am overwhelmed by the prompt and friendly reply. Aren't you all too?  ;D

Well, congrats: the first step is taken!
Hopefully they are able to find another set. I'm convinced that, once you have them, you won't be disappointed (given your enthousiasm for the other Mahler/Haitink recordings). :)

Another strong vote for the Kerstmatinees box, and if you don't find it elsewhere, you might check on eBay.  If you're registered (free), you can set up a simple notification so that you receive an e-mail when anything with "Haitink" and "Mahler" is listed.  I've bought a number of the Concertgebouw boxes there.

Are there any thoughts on his recent CSO recordings after their fairly strong initial "wow this sounds pretty good" reception from reviewers? Do you feel that they have staying power? The 6th really hit me in a way that many of his recordings do not. It was typically "objective", but there was a great intensity there too - the work just felt "bigger" and more dynamic than the one in his boxed Concertgebouw cycle.

While I can't make much in the way of direct comparisons,  I'd say at least three of his new recordings are worth getting on their own.  To clarify
From the Philips set I have 3,4 and DLvdE.
From CSO Resound I have 1,2,  and 6, plus the RCO Live recording of 4, which I think we can include as part of the CSO series.
The Philips 4 was one of my first Mahler purchases, two decades or more ago, and until I started seriously into Mahler, one of the few Mahler recordings I had.  I still like it, but I probably haven't listened to it for over a year now.  In part that's because I have so many other alternate recordings, and in part because over the past couple of months Mahler has receded somewhat as a percentage of what I listen to.
The RCO 4 I got a couple of months ago, and have played  a couple of times, and also like it--but at this point I don't want to make any direct comparisons between the two.
I very much like the CSO 1 and the CSO 6--the adjectives you used, intense, bigger, dynamic--I would also use, although of course I'm not comparing to any other performance, and I obviously can't say how it differs from the Philips.
The CSO 2 seems safely mainstream to me, and as I said, I don't have the CSO 3.

Of the CSO recordings, I find the 3rd the best. It is very measured but builds inexorably towards the finale in a way that very few performances ever achieve. The finale is just amazing. The 6th is also very good in that same measured but ultimately overwhelmingly inevitable way that Haitink achieves. I like the 2nd also quite a bit, but I think it is certainly a bit more mainstream. Still a wonderful performance. I don't own the 1st. I heard it on the radio and found it unconvincing for a number of reasons. I was at the concerts for the other three, 2, 3 & 6. I will hear Haitink conduct Mahler 4 with the CSO tomorrow!

The finale of the 3rd is one of Haitink's babies.
I do not have the CSO recording, but all the others I have (Concertgebouw studio & live Christmas, Berliner Phil studio & live DVD) are amazing, too.

Thanks, Jay. I had already noticed a japanese in the same bankruptcy-inducing price range.... :-X

Too bad nobody at Philips/Universal - or whatever it's called nowadays - sees the demand for that kind of hidden treasure chest.

Maybe in Holland ?
