Nonetheless, I prevailed...!

André (.....), gefeliciteerd met deze bestelling!   $:)

Did they have the CDs?

Artem

Haitink conducting Mahler's First Symphony was my second experience with that works after Kondrashin and it really showed it in a different light to me. Wouldn't mind hearing him conducting the Fifth or the Seventh after this discussion.

Gee, I don't know. I received an update today:

From what I understand my bestel status seems to be okay.  :-\

I will defer to people who actually speak Dutch, but I think they said they have mailed it via Netherlands Postal Service.  Unless wordt verzonden is in the future tense.

Correct.  :)

It is a pity that the CD set is OOP. At the time I let it pass...stupid, stupid.... :(

I was actually present at the performance the 7th symphony.  :)

The new erato

Is that different recordings from the Philips series?

There are 2 Haitink Mahler cd-boxsets issued by Philips: the complete studio recordings from the 1960s and 1970s (the first symphony was recorded twice and, AFAIK, the studio integral delivers the 2nd recording).

The other boxset offers live recordings from the so-called Christmas matinees. It's incomplete, because Haitink left the orchestra before finishing this live integral, and the Concertgebouw didn't invite him back to finish it. (IIRC, Chailly's first Christmas Matinee was Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.)

The incomplete Mahler/Haitink Christmas boxset was reissued as DVD set (for the Dutch market) by Universal, and that's the one purchased by André. It offers the same recordings as the live cd-boxset.

IMO, that's a truly superb performance.

I heard Haitink conduct the New York Philharmonic a few month's ago in Mahler's 3rd. It was meticulously conducted and well-played. It was a rather slow performance but you don't feel slow. I think at times he gets a reputation for being boring because he doesn't have the podium antics that the likes of Gergiev, Rattle, or Dudamel project and he doesn't seem as cerebral as the likes of Boulez. But I always find him to be a great musician, someone who understands his art, has great baton techniques and manages the orchestra well. It is little wonder than he has been top of the heap for over 40 years. I get the feeling that the musicians like him and respond to him. Maybe being a competent kappelmeister has sometimes earned him a bad reputation over the years, but I think he is one of few of the "old school" types left that a lot of people still respect.

IIRC Haitink was a violinist in one of the top dutch orchestras and raised quickly to conducting and managed to co-assume the mantle of COA conductorship (with Jochum) at a quite early age. This being IMHO the best ensemble in the world, and since quite a long time ago, I assume Haitink learned the value of collegiality (vs Mengelberg's authoritarian rule) and also benefited from the postwar era of coevality that more or less redefined european orchestral ensemble standards in the 1950s.

In that sense he may be thought of as the archetypical 'collegiate' conductor appreciated by all ensembles where a similar history may have been experienced (think of the Koussevitsky, Szell, Toscanini years, which were quickly followed by a 'thaw' leading to greater democrarization of our orchestras).

In any event, Haitink inherited the musical culture of one of the pre-eminent Mahler orchestras at a time where 20th century curiosity was sweeping through the musical world. Bernstein and the NYPO may be the only equivalent - and that may be one of the only times where Bernstein and Haitink can be mentioned in the same breath.

Update on the Haitink kertmatinees set. It arrived today. I dare not open it. Still shrink-wrapped. I though I bought cd's , they are DVDs... It doesn't say anywhere if they are Region I or II. In other words I'm afraid I'll never be able to play them... How can I make sure ? The web site is in dutch, I don't understand much... :-[

Several things:
1. Many music DVDs are Region 0, meaning they will play in any region.
2. If it's PAL (as opposed to NTSC) then your North American player and TV might not play it, regardless of region coding.
3. I've had good luck playing European (Region 2 PAL) DVDs on a Mac. Not sure about PCs. I think they now limit the number of times you can change the player's region, but the number is something like 5. So if you have a way to rip DVDs, do them all at once and be done with it.
4. The RIAA and the MPAA have spent the past 20 years devising new ways to make things difficult for legitimate users while not actually inhibiting piracy.

Hope this helps.

Marc

The website says: DVD, regio 2.

http://www.bol.com/nl/p/mahler-kerstmatinees/1002004004638354/

And it's definitely PAL only.

Man, I hate all those different formats!

Thumbs up for your luck in getting those discs played, André.

André

Aaaarrrggghhhhh ! The discs won't play..... :'(

André

This seems awfully complicated for someone as technically challenged as myself  :P.

There is a place that transfers dvds for 9$ per hour of listening time (+ 2$ per dvd). Thats 9$ x 12 hours + 2$ x 4dvds. Outrageous !

Anothe option is to buy a DVD machine that plays all regions. That would be half the price. I think I'll explore that option...

londonrich

If your computer has a DVD drive, you can probably play them on that using VLC, which seems to ignore any Region coding  - http://www.videolan.org/

If you do that make sure that it also does PAL to NTSC signal conversion, beside playing all regions.

londonrich: You're talking to some one who is null and void in electronics  ??? Does my computer have a DVD drive? Gee, I don't know. even if it had one, I would NOT watch it on the computer. It's not connected to my stereo system and sits in a corner of the house I rarely visit (I always use my Ipad for internet).

I elected to buy an all-region DVD player instead. From Samsung. Reviews are mostly very positive and the price is nice

PS Drasko: it seems to do that.

Great solution, André!  :)   I bought one ten years ago and it opened up a wide array of films. One of my best purchases ever. I think that all players should be region-free in the first place. Perhaps it is time to consider a region-free bluray player?
