I keep a separate stack of CD's that were loaned to me for this very reason. I recently sought out a friend that I hadn't seen in over 5 years and dropped off his CD's at his work. It hurt moy conscience too much that I still had them. Felt good giving them back.

As for giving them back, I think it should be the responsibility of the borrower to initiate the return. I hate having to ask for borrowed items back and feel like I shouldn't even have to. Same goes for money.

Yeah, I have the separate stack, I just forget that it's there.

Only if I know that I'm going to get them back! I'm sure my cello teacher still has some of mine after two years!

When I was in college, I loaned out my lps of Schnabel playing Beethoven to someone whom I believed was a very good friend.  After months of asking for the lps to be returned, one day I found the phone disconnected.  He had gone home to Illinois (or whatever midwestern state he came from), with my lps.  Since then I haven't loaned out a recording.  I'll dupe a cd for a friend, but the cd never leaves my home.

CDs, even OOP ones are easily replaceable. Encouraging interest in the music I adore, is not so easy, so I have no trouble lending out CDs to friends when they express interest. I have so many CDs at this point that if one is damaged or lost, I generally will not miss it right away. I likely have a digital copy saved already so replacement only becomes necessary if and when my storage array explodes and I *just* have to hear a performance.

None of my friends/relatives have a taste in classical music; all they care about: Asian pop/rap.

But then again, most teenagers don't give a flying rat's rear about old men and their sticks...

Me too. I recently sent a boxed set across the Atlantic and got it back inside of a month.  :)

Only to a few friends who value CDs as much as I do and who understand the proper care and handling.

Same here.

Same here, with a few exceptions.  Some discs never leave the house; I won't even take them to work with me.  These tend to be rare, oop recordings.

i would be delighted if someone asks, however, the reality is none of my friends care for classical music, not even the slightest interest.

I'm in the same boat. Very few of my University friends care for Classical Music.

Another question?  :)

Do you loan your CDs out?

I don't because I've learnt [many, many years ago] that they often don't come back at all or if they do I've had to chase them and they have marks on the cd, booklet and scratches on the jewel case.

Same here - NEVER!  ;D
Unless I would want them returned scratched and dirty or not at all...  :-\

Even other classical devotees with collections of their own?

All the time, to anyone who wants them. There are not many around me who do, but in principal I have no problem lending, including books. And I frequently forget about them too  :-\

Can't say - unfortunately I don't know people with a similar affection for a classical music collection.
(At least not in my immediate, physical surroundings!  :D)

My thoughts, exactly. I'm trying to start a club on campus to root out closeted classical lovers.  ;D

I lend away CD's from time to time, but never classical music, because none of my friends share my interest. Few of the other recordings are hard to find (except for the vinyl which never leaves the house). I think I always get back my CD's as my friends are trustworthy.

When it comes to books and DVD I also lend out frequently, and I have no control. With these items (especially DVD's) it can happen that they don't come back (and if I've seen them they are not extremely missed either).
