That would, to me, seem the only meaningful use of Twitter.

Between Facebook and text messaging (if one is so inclined - I'm not), I'd think all the other 'bases' would be covered.

(Though admittedly, the business angle Mark hints at is not something I had considered previously.)

I think the most logical use of twitter's future would be in the search area. There is no more up-to-date information source to be found anywhere. It's just like the 'What are you listening to' thread here. when you do a search, generally the most relevant information will be contained in that thread.

But that would probably require people to sign up: I don't require a Google account or a Yahoo account or an MSN accout to search the 'net using their respective search engines. Also, given that some people would prefer their account, or Tweets, rather, be accessible by only certain people, it defeats the purpose of Twitter being used as a search facility. And search results (up-to-date information) restricted to only 140 characters? Every hit on Google's results page probably contain as many characters. I'd rather prefer at least three-paragraphs-worth news even if it's "delayed" by half an hour.

It's not only about headline news. Last week, I was in front of the computer while there was the silly Eurovision song contest going on live. I went to twitterfall.com (a website which broadcasts tweets in the subjects that you choose). The most popular keyword at the time was Eurovision. I clicked on it, and the information that began to stream was at a rate of more than 300 tweets a second  :o Of course not all of it was useful information, majority was about what people thought of the songs. But still, this is as up to date information as currently possible. I don't mean to say that Twitter is a very good search source for now, but it has the potential to be so. I think that's what the Big Boys are thinking as well. I don't see why else Apple would offer them 700m. The information on Twitter is too disorganized and too much text based to be categorized, sold and used as raw data.

Most interesting.  Perhaps Twitter is best used in combination with other applications--at least at the moment?  But I get the gist of your prediction, which might be very accurate.

Twitter website is, paradoxically, useless  :D
With Twitterfall just click on a popular subject (all popular current subjects) bring the speed to maximum and see what happens. Twitterfall has the option to track posts geographically too, which is a great option.

I  use Twitterdeck to follow and post. That one is a small but very convenient application.

Do I twitter?  Only when it's very cold out and I've forgotten my coat.

Seriously, I hate cell phones--the idea of twitter is so nefarious even the Devil couldn't have come up with it on his own.

Another forum I visit has a "Post of the Month" award. I'm telling you ... it would be a great idea.

Bruce's point about 'microblogging' is precisely why I started on Twitter. My own blog necessarily moves at a much slower pace than some others, so having my Twitter account feeding into it lets my readers know what I'm doing with regards to classical music (and sometimes, other stuff, too), and shows that my blog hasn't 'gone cold'.

As to the inconsequential stuff I put up on Twitter, this gets junked after a day or so. I like to do regular 'housekeeping'. ;D

+1 I hate cell phones!  I had one for awhile and my students would call me so much that I felt like I was "on call" 24-7.  When it was home phone only, they suddenly became alot more discrete and respectful about it and only called when it was really important.  And in general they hesitate to call landlines (the smartest student in the class was never bothered because he didn't have a cell phone).  And do you notice that if someone is going to call your home or office phone they actually stop to consider if it's a good time or not, but if it's a cell phone they don't care?  But for some reason all manners evaporate in the presence of a cell phone.  Which leads me to another rant-- I hate when you are talking to someone in person and they drop everything to answer the phone.  It takes no effort to call someone, but to actually take the time to go see someone?  Who has the priority here?  And you were already talking to them anyway!  It baffles the mind!! ??? >:(

I don't do that. I don't even really know what it is, except they talk about it on the news and some politicians got caught twitting dumb things.

People behaved differently when telephones became common, and again with cell phones. Computers have changed behavior in many ways. The holdouts usually say something like "What do you need it for?" which isn't really the point. No one needs any of these things, they just change the way you live and some people are bound to see the advantages and others won't.

There is now a website called twatter.com, but it's just a "Coming Soon" place holder and nobody knows what it is.

My cell phone can't twitter, text, take pictures, or do much of anything except send and receive calls. I got tired of feeling inept fumbling with my Nokia, so I bought a Jitterbug, the cell phone for dummies...um, I meant seniors. I like it!!

Hey, my listening habits are probably of fundamental interest for the world ;) Done with foobar2000 and foo_twitter_post.

Still not familiar with Twitter. If I reply to someones post, the reply appears on my page. Will he ever notice it? He won't, right? Only if he's a follower?
Also I'm not sure if I need the hashtag #music, what's it good for?
