Blondes plan parade to 'cheer up' Latvia

RIGA, Latvia, May 27 (UPI) -- The head of the Latvian Blondes association said a planned parade of about 2,000 blond women is aimed at cheering the country up amid economic woes.

Marika Gederte, head of the club for women with yellow hair, said the parade planned for Sunday in the Latvian capital Riga will be held under the motto "make the world a brighter place" and will involve an orchestra comprised entirely of blondes, RIA Novosti reported Wednesday.

"People need positive emotions, and I hope this event will cheer them up," Gederte said.

She said the parade will lead up to a ball that will feature contests in categories including Latvia's best blond lawyer and best blond journalist.

And the next story is even better....

TRIESTE, Italy, May 27 (UPI) -- An Italian bride went through with her wedding ceremony but ran off with the wedding car driver before the reception, her new husband said.

The husband, a 34-year-old man identified only as Andrea, said his bride Sara, 30, told their 30 wedding guests in Trieste that she wanted to change clothes after the ceremony but never arrived at the restaurant where the reception was held, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Wednesday.

Andrea said Sara drove off with a friend of his who was tasked with chauffeur duty. The husband said he and wedding guests called the pair on their cell phones when they failed to arrive at the reception and Sara told him she was "sorry" and had "made a mistake." Andrea quoted Sara as telling him that her "heart belongs to someone else."

Sara and the driver left for Greece to carry out the married couple's planned honeymoon, Andrea said. He said he is considering legal action against his wife.

"Cheer up, Latvia!"

At first I thought it was a song, like "Don't cry for me, Argentina!"

As for the second story, what can you say but: "Il sucko profundo!"
"Meet Miss Ruth Sherwood, from Columbus, Ohio, the Middle of the Universe!"

Can't be too careful vetting chauffeurs, these days.

So, if it takes 2,000 blondes to cheer up poor little Latvia during the economic downturn, how many blondes would it take on the streets of Washington, DC to cheer up the US?  And who would join the parade as America's best blond politician?  Best blond hedge fund manager?  Best blond mortgage banker?  Best blond harsh interrogations specialist?   Do I hear Ann Coulter?  Are we feeling better yet?

Cheer Up, Latvia! seems like the title of a long-running, state-sponsored morning chat show.

"Live from the Ministry of Information in the heart of historic Riga, it's Cheer Up, Latvia!"
