Indeed! This summer my family plans a road trip to the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is 1200 miles from our house in central Texas - so we will be driving the equivalent of going from Paris to Kiev and back. Indeed, driving from our house to the Texas border is the same distance as a straight line from Paris to Stockholm.

I think I mentioned in a different thread, the first highway road sign you see on Interstate 10 when coming from Louisiana into Texas says "Beaumont - 22 mi.  El Paso - 850 mi.".   :D   That says a lot without saying a lot... ;)

I am witnessing the opposite right now.  I am from Texas and I am currently staying in The Netherlands for a couple months.  I've been to a different city every weekend because they are so freaking close together.  In American none of these cities would have been able to maintain its social identity.  They would have all become apart of Generica.
