Holden

Rubio, let me know what you think of the Rach preludes. If you've heard Richter (who is peerless in this repertoire IMO) how do you think he compares?
Cheers

I am very curious too, as I have heard that the composer thought very highly of Benno's performances of his works.

Apologies for jumping in again, but that disc is superb. IMO one of the best integral performances of the Preludes I've heard: and I compare with Cortot, Argerich, Sokolov, Lugansky, Arrau, Pires and Rubinstein for intégrales, plus the assorted Horowitz, Richter et al. :)

The sound is also very good on the Naxos release.

OK, but Holden (and I) are asking about the Rachmaninov preludes.  :)

Not to mention the superb rendition of Medtner's op.22 sonata.

Landed today:

Interesting....I learned something today.  I only thought this was a Tchaikovsky opera.  Did not realize this was also a work done by Mr. P!  :)

I think I will listen to some of these discs the coming weekend. I have visitors now, so not much time for music.

But the fruits of the Europadisc Testament sale keep arriving :).

Pyotr Ilyich's Tchaikovsky's opera is wonderful, of course, Ray!

Prokofiev's Opus 71 is a very different matter . . . not an opera (there's hardly any singing), but more musically substantial than your average incidental music, and wonderfully attuned to Pushkin's verse-drama.  It's like listening to the play (– well, it is listening to the play –) without at all minding that you don't see people on the stage.

Bill: This would be a wonderful classroom exhibit for a junior or senior drama (or lit) class. (The play is in English translation in the recording.)

A visitor who does not wish to listen to Rachmaninoff is not welcome in my home.  8)

Mmm, nice, Corey!

I notice now the cover also says "piano music" — an extra treat!

Kullervo

Found this on Amazon Marketplace for $5. Got it mainly for Khamma and some piano pieces I haven't heard, but more Debussy is always a good thing.  8)

It's my mother and two nieces, and the girls occupy the TV full-time (so I cannot use the stereo). Now it's reality TV and the Hills all the way :).

Very much interested to hear what you think of the Egyptian Nights disc. I've eyed it on and off now for some time.

I like the disc a great deal, all the various works in their several characters.  Even the "tub-thumpers" are an enjoyable listen; though discounting those two pieces (Zdravitsa and Flourish, Mighty Land) there is still 50+ minutes of just plain great Prokofiev.
