I heard Lupu play the Grieg in the mid-seventies. It's still one of my most cherished concert memories. A couple of years ago he played the Emperor, and the magic wasn't there. Sometimes I wonder if I idealized the Grieg performance I heard, but my databank is normally quite faithful :D.

For what it's worth, I heard Lupu play the Beethoven 4th with Luisi and the DSK, and the magic wasn't there either.

Perhaps he misplaced it somewhere along the line? :P

(I recall saying in this very forum, in fact, how I found him 'arthritic' - or something along those lines.

It just felt laboured, as if he's too old for it... Edit: Though I do like, and to a significant extent admire his recordings of the concertos; albeit still not the 4th. And he's generally better in Brahms than Beethoven, IMO.)

Almost missed this wonderful set.  Most of my Leonhardt's recordings are on LP.  It is time to advance to the digital age with his recordings.  The price is better than fabulous ...

Hi Tasos, the Martinu looks delightful, tell us in time, what you think of it.
Hope you are well?

3 :)

Harry - I'm interested in several of those CPO discs that you imaged recently; I already own the Marx & Krieger, and the first volume of the Ries String Quartets; now I have not heard of Hans Koessler but those chamber works do interest me!  Excellent review of the latter on MusicWeb HERE; plus, Scott Morrison gave the recording 4*/5* rating on Amazon HERE - apparently, he was a cousin of Max Reger!  Edit - i.e. the composer, not Scott -  ;D

Will add the two mentioned to my 'wish list' and await your esteemed comments - report back please in the 'listening thread' - thanks!  Dave  :D

Latest arrivals from Amazon; mostly Eschenbach.

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Well, I'm all spent up for July; but then I checked the Hyperion 'bottom ten' sale, and discovered this:

Well, I'd already bought volume II a few days ago, also in the 'bottom ten' sale; so they clearly saw me coming. Onto the slippery slope....

Had no intention buying Beethoven cycle but ridiculous price of 7 euros at prestoclassical clearance sale changed my mind, Fischer Mahler from same place (for under 6 euros). Sofronitsky is brand new release from Vista Vera (ordered from their website) containing few previously unexisting pieces in his discography - 1st and 4th Ballades and incomplete 3rd Sonata (sans finale).

Can you give a link to those clearance sales of Beethoven and Mahler? Can't find it at their site, also not at the clearance sales header. Thanks in advance. 7 euro's for that Beethoven set is really ridiculous. It's a great set.

The 7 euros price has doubled I think, or more than doubled. :(

I guess that's the purpose of a clearance. :(

Just ordered the following CD's from MDT ...

The new erato

From hyperions website.

The Handel halfprice sale:

This should be called the halfwit sale as one should be pretty halfwitted not to take the opportunity. I have bought Joshua and Judas Maccabeus and been convinced of the quality of this series.

From the please buy me:

I've been steadily buying from the Handel half-price sale since it started, and have now bought almost everything in the list. I check the 'Please someone buy me' list every couple of days - their strategy is clearly working!

For anyone who doesn't have the magnificent L'Allegro, Penseroso, Moderato set, for heaven's sake don't wait - get one before July is out.

I bought this set about a month ago.  It is a pretty delightful set ...
