Well, I've had a complete set of the Glazunov Symphonies on my wish list for a while, but there never seems to be a concensus on the 'best' set, if one is available?

So, will be interested in the comments on the one above shown by David; I've seen some good reviews on the BBC National Orchestra of Wales / Tadaaki Otaka box (added above, middle); and decent comments on the Russian State Symphony Orchestra / Valeri Polyansky set on the bargain Brilliant label (above, right) - I know that Jarvi has also received praise for his recordings (not sure if a 'box' exists yet?) - there must be others.

Thus, opinions & recommendations - which Glazunov Symphony box would be a good starter (currently, I have just 1 or 2 of the Symphonies) - thanks all -  :D

If you need the best performances Dave, my absolute favourites are the Neeme Jarvi recordings he made on Orfeo, still the best ever recorded.
I gave the Otaka box to George if I remember well, for me this was a dead performance.
Polyanski is decent but his tempi suck ever so often.
The Naxos survey is really no option, bad performances and ditto recordings.
I think we will yet have to wait for excellent performances.

I thought that Serebrier's performances on Warner had the critics fairly united as being superior to other sets?

That's also my impression from reviews I've read.

A couple of purchases within the Gurnian era (I don't actually know when it is, if he quizzed me I would fail) ;D

Took the plunge on this 15-CD set for 15 dollars.  Not too bad of a deal, ya think?  0:)

Trying to "get" Gilels still.  I hope my 3 dollars will be worth it.  I know it will.  ;D

Don & Jens - thanks for the replies; I do own the single disc below, but I'm not aware that a 'box set' has been released yet - Dave  :)

A great recording, Dave!

In the post today: an Aho disc I need, a Bruckner disc I don't need. But as many of us know, want supercedes need more often than not.

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

I'm curious to hear you on that Knappertsbuch B 8, Sarge.

Well, the Wagner on it is pretty good, in any case.  ;D

(One of the most overrated 8th to the extend anyone still rates it highly.)
