Brian,  How was the Bach?  I presume your download of SACD was only for the stereo tracks since the SACD tracks can only be played on a SACD player.
I haven't listened to it yet but Jens Laurson named it his favorite CD of 2005 and indeed his favorite Bach keyboard album ever. Listening to bits and pieces I can assure you the piano tone is ravishing - and Tharaud is always a sensitive, elegant performer.

That one's a no-brainer.

Glad to see that you went ahead and purchased that, George! Mind posting some thoughts on it after doing some listening?

Sure thing! I haven't even worked through the solo box yet, though so it could be awhile. I have already heard a number of performances from the concerto box in earlier incarnations and all of the performances were outstanding. I see no reason for you to hesitate on either box, honestly.  :)

This is an excellent set at a very reasonable price.  I got mine early this year.
Enjoy!

Someone loves you!   :) Enjoy, my friend!

Thank you both!

I have Knappertsbusch's Bavarian Opera Orchestra 3rd from 1954. It's thrilling from first note to last, is excellently played and recorded in good, clear mono sound. As far removed from that dreary 8th as could be.  Based on that I'd definitely try this WP 3rd, Sarge. I haven't heard it, but it's always been highly regarded. If you buy it, please report !

Thanks for your reply. I did order it along with the WP Fourth also on Testament. Should be here by mid-week.

Just curious about it, couldn't find any samples.

The post woman was cursing me today. Four separate packages, including a monster from Berlin containing the Gewandhaus Quartet's Beethoven which came from an Amazon seller in a ridiculously large box, well cushioned with what appeared to be the complete Sunday edition of the New York Times. I bought it blind but since it only cost €20 (2 Euro a disc) I won't be terribly disappointed if it's less than stellar. Having recently purchased the other Jerusalem Quartet's Haydn CD, and declared it the best Haydn in my collection, I'm confident I'll like this one as well. The Suske's Beethoven I bought to comfort and appease Snyprrr of course  ;D

Late breaking news: a second DHL truck arrived, a different postal employee, bringing me seven operas starring Leyla Gencer. This was another bargain: 14 CDs for €15.

This one looks very interesting. As I see, Kleinhapl/Woyke have also recorded the cello sonatas by Brahms.

I've been bombarded with near-hyperbolic statements about this recording to the point where I was ready to dismiss it as a fad bought for with PR money. But I've just given it a first listening earlier today and I must say that it did impress me quite a bit. Love the pianism. All seems so... ruthlessly-exuberant; like a gifted composing tween saying "fuck it" and going with the groovy flow.

Sounds good enough (and that includes the samples I came by). I like the description ruthlessly-exuberant. Wishlisted.

Clunk.

Dave - I had that one on my MDT 'wish list' - returned from a short vacation, and the 'bargain' price was no longer being offered (can't remember the details, though) - oh well, still have all of the SQs by various groups, but would still like one 'box set' -  :-\ :)
