Not actual arrivals, but recent orders on their way:

Jongens piano trios, a composers I've been waiting to explore.

I love early Italian "opera", and here I've got two Euridices on their way so supplement my multitude of Monteverdi Orefeos.

It stands to reason I love madrigals and french renaissance chansons as well, so I had to try this recent set at its new, dirt cheap, sales price.

A fine haul Erato! Love the Jongen/Caccini/Sweelinck dics. The Arts recording I don't know, but would love to hear what you think of it.

The Karajan is most excellent.
Very good, I look forward to it  :)

Now this is a very attractive set since there are not many recordings of Sweelinck's works out there ...

Just placed an order on the following CD's, including a warhorse on SACD ...

"The French Connection" (AV2178)
Vivaldi Concertos for Flute, Bassoon, Violin

This is awesome stuff.

Jens - I have plenty of Vivaldi and assumed that many of the works on the disc above would already be in my collection, but in checking, I have only 3 of the 10 works listed on that recording.  Curious about the instrumentation, i.e. modern vs. HIP?  Regardless, will add to my wish list - thanks for the recommendation!  :)

I have 100+ CD's/LP's on Vivaldi's works and I am pretty much done with his instrumental works as far as building out my collection is concerned.  I would, however, get more of his vocal/choral works on CD since they are mostly on LP now.  My two sets of Vivaldi's concertos, 18 LP's or CD's per set are quite comprehensive.  The CD set also features Giuliano Carmignola.

Stuart that looks like a great box set!  Contains 18 discs & is priced at $72 on the Amazon Marketplace - would certainly be a quick and inexpensive way to obtain a Vivaldi collection!  ;D

Currently, I have about 3 dozen Vivaldi discs, so should have much of that box 'covered' - Dave

This CD set should be one of the best in Vivaldi's concertos (performed on non-period instruments) as I Solisti Veneti under Claudio Scimone (now retired) with Giuliano Carmignola really put in some very dazzling performance.  My last goal for my Vivaldi's collection is to acquire the choral sets by the King's Consort.  BTW, I paid £36.44 for the set at MDT including shipping back in January (about $58 at current exchange rate).  The set was on sale at the time.

Well, I was listening to the Bach Cantatas w/ Suzuki today (first 10-CD set) and decided to purchase another one - now already had 3 discs from the second set, i.e. Vols. 11-20, so decided to purchase the one listed below (only 3 duplicates in the discs that I already own!); others have been recommended on the GMG forum and/or on some of the periodicals that I receive -  :D

BACH Cantatas. Singet Dem Herrn. Bach Collegium /Suzuki. Bach Cantatas Vols. 21-30.

CHERUBINI Six String Quartets. Melos Quartett. Brilliant Classics 3cds

VIVALDI The French Connection. La Serenissima & Adrian Chandler - Jens recommendation!

SCHMIDT Symphony No. 2, Fuga Solemnis. Anders Johnsson. Malmo Symphony Orchestra /Sinaisky. Naxos

HAMMER / ABEL The Last Gambist. Simone Eckert, Hamburger Ratsmusik.

Good choice! A very accomplished alternate performance to the Chandos set (although not as good); the fillers and its price make this a very worthwhile release.

Chandos no doubt has better SQ than either Naxos or BC.  You get what you paid for in life and music is no exception.

Well, I don't necessarily agree w/ the statement above; true, Naxos is a 'budget' company and their repackaging of older material can suffer in sound quality, but much is quite good.  Their more recent own recordings often have superb sound production - the problem at times being the musicians used in trying to reduce their costs.

The Schmidt recording(s) of the symphonies are newly made (2007) and the Naxos engineers can certainly do a good job - each release needs to be evaluated and compared w/ other alternatives.  What prompted me to give this new recording a try was certainly the price and the filler material (vs. Jarvi), but also an excellent recommendation from Jerry Dubins in the Sept-Oct issue of Fanfare, the last paragraph quoted below:

Quote This is a disc for all lovers of iridescent, gorgeous, Romantic orchestral music. If you already know these scores by Schmidt, you will not need convincing. If you don't, for the modest price of a Naxos CD you can convince yourself. The only question is, how does this version of the Symphony stack up against Järvi's with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra? Performance-wise, I'd have to rate them about equal, with the Detroit strings perhaps a bit fuller and more lush than Malmö's. For recording, I'd give the new Naxos a slight edge for its impactful sound. If you already have the Järvi, I wouldn't say Sinaisky is essential. However, if you don't—and it appears that the Järvi is now available only in a multi-disc set of all four symphonies—the new Naxos is a no-brainer. Therefore, an exceptionally strong recommendation. Jerry Dubins

I'd say this is a generalization. I've heard stuff with excellent sound on Brilliant (like Barshai's Shostakovich cycle) and stuff with great sound on Naxos (Bernstein's Mass, Karlowicz with the Warsaw Philharmonic, "Corroboree").

You are very fortunate indeed! I ordered my copy from a shop in Canada that had it listed online - after scouring Google and not finding any other copies. You're going to love the sound of the piano, but the interpretations of Ms Boegner are of equal merit. One of those combinations of HIP instrument and artistry that would be considered top-notch no matter what piano it used. My favorite nocturne set  8)

Chandos tends to offer a very rich sound that some folks consider too rich and not sufficiently detailed.  It's just a matter of personal taste.

Have you heard samples of it, Dave? I ask because it has a very different sound than your average piano.
