First CD purchase of the year...

This is a bit off the beaten path, and it's music I'm not familiar with, from an otherwise familiar composer.

Plus, it was 15% off! ;D

Went on a bit of a spree at HMV. Worked out at under £2 a disc!

Well, I decided that New Year's Day deserved my first order(s) of 2010 - split between the Amazon Marketplace & BRO (Berkshire Record Outlet) - total of 12 discs for about $8 each:

Alwyn, William - Chamber Music & Songs w/ many on Naxos (excellent Scott Morrison recommendation on Amazon HERE)

Benda, Franz - Flute Concerti w/ Bernward Lohr & Anne Rohrig + Hannoversche Hofkapelle on Christophorus - an 'inexpensive' BRO chance?

Chopin, Frederic - Nocturnes w/ Earl Wild on Ivory Classics (2-CDs) - forum recommendation +  great comments HERE

Juon, Paul - Piano Trios w/ Altenberg Trio Vienna on Challenge (2-CDs) - have his Piano Quartets on CPO & enjoy

Kraus, Joseph - Complete Symphonies V.3  w/ Sundkvist & Swedish Chamber Orchestra on Naxos (have the other 3 volumes of these works, already)

Marais, Marin - Pieces en Trio w/ Musica Pacifica on Virgin Classics (2-CDs) - forum recommendation & my first experience w/ this composer!

Vanhal, Johann - Flute Quartets w/ Arnold Choi & Janaki String Trio on Naxos - have not added a Vanhal to my collection in a while

Ysaye, Eugene - Sonatas Solo Violin w/ Thomas Zehetmair on ECM - have not heard these works before; great reviews from the Amazonians!

Ysaye, Eugene - String Trio et al w/ Ole-Eirik Ree et al on Naxos - forum & Scott Morrison recommendations; the latter HERE!

Oh, you are so in for a treat! These are fantastic works, and this recording of it is magnificent. My favorite, ahead of Kavakos and Turban (distant third).

Just purchased these:

Oh, and first post here!

Imogen Cooper's Schubert is extremely cultured and probing. I love it. But I think these are newer readings? As is the Ehnes disc of Paganini Caprices (he recorded them 10 years ago on Telarc - he makes Paganini's music sound incredibly beautifu).  Please let us know what you think !

Although Juon is considered a 2nd or 3rd tier composer, I love his chamber works and also have the CPO Piano Quartets disc and the Piano Trios on Challenge.  Top-rate stuff in my view with a wealth of musical themes and treatments - never a dull moment.

Don - thanks & glad for the support on that purchase!  :D

I was just checking his list of compositions HERE; about a hundred opus numbers w/ many chamber works, so just curious if you or others have recommendations on recordings other than the two already discussed?  Thanks to all for comments -  :)

My opinion is that it's great! You probably have most, if not all of Sir Adrian Boult's stereo recordings, plus some other great stuff as well.

Much happy listening to you! :)

The only other Juon disc I have is a Profil recording of his Piano Quartet No. 1 coupled with Dvorak's Piano Quartet No. 1 - it's a fine recording.  However, I haven't yet delved into the discs devoted to Juon on the Musiques Suisses label; that's the label which seems to be home base for Juon.

Excellent.
(perhaps) the highlight of an excellent 7-disc series!

The string quartets from that series were my intro to the composer. They are awesome!

Pulled the plug on this one. How nice to see Sony finally do some serious reissues again.

Nice! It also looks like they are finally giving us some better cover art too.

This new reissue series looks like it's going to be pretty expansive.

Keep your eyes open!

Assume same recording inserted above (right) which I've owned for a number of years - likely cheaper now!  :D

Better expansive than expensive. About £ 4 on amazon.co.uk IIRC.
