Mozart, Don Giovanni. (Werner van Mechelen, Huub Claessen, Le Petite Bande, Sigiswald Kuijken)

HANSSLER
Bach, Keyboard Works, Volume 1

Just Vol. 1, 16 CDs

EDIT: Now that I've found out this set does NOT contain the WTC, I may cancel it - dunno, still seems like a good thing to have, despite the duplication.

I can't get enough of the 3rd. It's wonderfully unharried - three equally proportioned movements all with a perfect inevitability both alone and as a whole. The finale ticking away at its own pace has a weird nobility to it that I don't find in much other Sibelius, which occasionally feel can be too ethereal or chaste for its own good. It feels a bit more humanly-scaled (and so risking the mundane) than the rest, I think my imperfect "point" might be. In the first movement you can sense him at a turning point from the Lemminkäinen suite and his later music. Very transitional, but also very burning-edge because of that - maybe like many of the other famous 3rds out there.
tks for that leith - you have a very eloquent way of describing music which i wish i had  :( i must spin it again  :)

"Wonderfully unharried" — they say that of Henning's Passion!

Is the WTC in vol 2 (or 3?)

This box seems to contain about half of the keyboard music discs from the Hanssler Backakademie series, so there was presumably a vol 2.  I don't see it listed, although numerous discs are listed in various places.

I was gonna say, 172 CD Bach set with no WTC? Further proof that monkeys are running these labels.

172 CD refers to the entire series.  Keyboard music volume 1 is 16 CDs.

No, the WTC is on vols 116/117.  They are not included in the boxset with vols 102-112, however.

Boxset confusion reigns supreme!  I'm very glad I acquired the discs from the Hanssler series when they were first issued; confusion gives me a headache.

I sure doesn't help that Hänssler has several different and confusing ways of describing the product:  The WTC recordings are 4 discs in two sets labeled vols 116 & 117 of the 172 disc (~140 volume) set of the Edition Bachakademie.  The boxset in question is volume 1 of the Complete Keyboard Works from this edition.  It is box set #8 among the boxsets offered as subsets of the complete 172 disc box comprising the entire edition, and it includes vols 102 to 112 of the complete Edition--11 volumes containing 16 CDs.

All clear?  ;D

Absolutely.  I wonder if SMP is missing from the set as well?

Given that Rilling is at the helm, does it matter?

I should say that I hope I purchased it, as I had to order it from Stradivarius, an Italian website.

George--I found a release by Stradivarius of Cherubini's string quartets in Borders.  Price was relatively high, but I went for it, and have no complaints about the quality.

Despite your hesitations and that of others here, I bought the Friere recording of the Nocturnes today.  I knew eventually I would get it, so I just made it easy on myself and gave in to temptation.  After listening to it,  I can see why you were underwhelmed.  "Low key' is the word I might use.

Also bought today:
Mozart Divertimenti K 334 & 247
Officina Musicale
directed by Orazio Tuccella
Label is apparently named  Fuga Libera.
The organizations are based in L'Aquila.

Fine playing, nothing earth shaking, but after all these are simply divertimenti written for Salzburg.
