You must be a search virtuoso of the highest order.  I was only able to find this disc on amazon.so.uk by searching for "second vienese school" with viennese misspelled.  I can't find it on amazon.com at all, despite the fact that your image is linked from amazon.com.  I wonder how they sell any of this set at all.
It is a mild catastrophy, labeling-wise. Some English language sites even have it with a German title (presumably because it's either poorly distributed or an import only). It's worse because the label's name is variously listed as MDG, MD&G and Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm.

My image came from Amazon.de, the images all seem to be hosted on a central server, whether they appear on Amazon.com or not.

Anyway, good on you, Sara!

(That was a thumbs up :P) I was quite chuffed to find it affordably. I hope the Chandos one goes the same way sometime (I've been watching its price gradually go down for ages, but it's still not quite there yet.)

At JPC the main title is: 20 Jahre Leipziger Streichquartett - 2.Wiener Schule

It also looks suspiciously like one of the two that keep stealing food from my cats as well ::) They are cute but way too familiar.

I've been called that before . . . .

I would like to hear more Goldmark's music. I only have recording of any of his music and it's a Joshua Bell recording (coupled with Sibelius). I might have to pick this one up myself. I like Conlon.

That's a good disc to start with, particularly for Previn's Rustic Wedding Symphony, which is unfortunately split across 2 discs for no good reason.

Thanks Daverz, I'll check it out at some point.

Strange. I think that's one of his very best, actually. No shtick, just music.

I've always suspected that in this case the fault lay more with the composer than the performer--I've never been enthused about Hindemith.

Interesting! I am curious about Gould in the solo sonatas (the one laconic 'review' on Amazon of the Roberts/Strong disc which I picked up on Monday expressed a preference for Gould).

I like Gould all right in Das Marienleben.

See my response to Jens.  I think the sonatas are typical Hindemith, and since Hindemith doesn't have strong resonances with me,  it's hard for me to get excited.   However, I may eventually fall for this recording.  If only to hear a sonata for tuba.

Gould was actually a strong advocate for Hindemith;  he wrote at least two essays (possibly liner notes, but I read them as part of an anthology of his essays) in praise of H.'s music.
(BTW, if you've never read some of his essays, do so.  His performances in prose are almost as good as his performances on the piano--and he was not afraid to poke fun at his own shtickelech.)

Now that I can empathize with.  ;D

It was another tough day for the hardest working woman in the Bundespost: the Roussel twofer bought primarily for the Piano Concerto. The Rattle Sibelius was only 99 cents--for that price I figured, why not complete his cycle? Verena and Mensch had good things to say about Barenboim's Schubert. Gould's Beethoven with Lenny bought to compare with hs earlier Third with Karajan. And Antheil is a composer I've always liked but have very little of: JPC's current low price for these CPO discs makes it attractive to buy in bulk.

Looks like you've got a good haul there. ;) I would be interested in your impressions of the Antheil when you hear them.

Recent revisitation to the Seventh Symphony made picking this up seem reasonable at $9:

The postman just delivered this set from Arkiv and this will be it for me as far as Mahler Symphonies go.  I will first finish up with Tennstedt and Haitink before I tackle this set ...

Yes, you are to be thanked. I wasn't aware of the disc until you pointed it out. I had planned to quote your post but was in a bit of a rush that day and didn't have time to look for it. I agree with what you said about the music and performance. I like the chronological programming, and like the way the music progresses from the dancehall to the intimate salon, the music growing in depth and interest. I love that little Klavierstück...and the Fantasie (starting at 1:26 we hear the future Bruckner). And the sound of that period Bösendorfer!...transports me back to the 19th century  8)

Sarge
Yeah, exactly---the sound of that instrument creates kind of nostalgia...!  BTW such a useful thread, i think :)
