I have this set.  The litttle symphonies are delightful works, and there's a lot of stuff crammed onto this set.

Performance/sound Daverz?

I splurged at HMV Japan:

Munch/Boston, 1961

Yeah, I know it's the Loewe edition, but I think that edition is interesting in itself, and I wanted to hear this performance.

Oistrakh playing Bruch and Hindemith.  Odd coupling, but I already have enough recordings of the Mathis symphony and the Metamorphoses that are on the Eloquence CD, so this was more attractive.

Argerich playing Ravel: Gaspard, Sonatine, Valses Nobles, PC in G.  This duplicates a much treasured 1974 recital Lp in addition to the concerto and Jeux d'eux.  AFAIK, the Valses were only on CD in a big Argerich box up to now.

Ormandy/Philadelphia in Tchaikovsky Symphonies 1-3.  It'll be nice to have these without vinyl pressing faults.

Monteux/LSO in Beethoven 4 & 7.

What are your impressions of the Milhaud box Karl?
Sound wise, performance?

I love all of it that I've heard so far, Harry.  Most of what is on this set, was conducted by the composer, so I must suppose that he got the performances about where he wants them, and I find them electrifying.  Sound is good.

Between the positive impressions of the Alun Francis symphonies box, and a sampler which a friend in DC sent me, this budget VoxBox issue was an easy sell (and I had a coupon).

Thanks Karl, it went straight up my list, its only 20 euro's, so that's a bargain considering we get the meastro himself right? :)

Will report back accordingly Harry.  Fear not for I have two complete audio recordings of the Ring (Solti and Furtwangler RAI). Apparently I can stomach quite a bit.....its Mahler that I am having a problem digesting  ???.....

Well with all the Symphonies or vocal works, and could you explain why that is?

Well in all honesty I have problems following Mahler's music (especially the symphonies except no.4 and no.1 to an extent) They start out in one key and end in a completely different one.  I feel there is no continuity in the music.  He has great moments but he shifts gears so often that it just seems like he's blending too many styles together in very short periods of time.  I must be missing something here because he is so highly regarded as a composer.  Guess I'll have to keep trying...
