Heh. Now imagine living in a country that actually has a great cathedral  ;)
No need to imagine, Brian.  BTW, while you're there, don't forget to pop up to York.  The cathedral is only one of its charms.

AAAH!! That Rachmaninov must be quite something. Michelangeli had so STRANGE repertoire! I forgot he played the Fourth; I must hear it some day.

I bought this recording for the Ravel. I'm not sure how the Rachmaninov is on this recording, but his Ravel is much praised and me being a huge fan of Ravel I had to buy it.

I like the Ravel. But the performance to have this for is in fact the Rach4. It's astonishing. The Ravel, well... Zimerman/Boulez is still what gets me weakest at the knees. Haas I think I gave away after a few listens... reviewed it here/then: http://ionarts.blogspot.com/2005/03/dg-originals-review.html. Found the left-hand concerto the weaker recording (my issues with this, rather than interpretation).
Hope you like it better.

Everybody has their favorites of course. I admire the Zimerman/Boulez a lot just like I admire both Argerich accounts with Abbado and, though a lot more subtle, Roge/Dutoit. I just can't wait to hear this recording.

2005:

Ravel's piano concerto(s) have been well served with recordings. No one plays with the helter-skelter excitement that Argerich brings to her DG recording of the G major concerto (DG Originals, coupled with Prokofiev's 3rd piano concerto, Abbado conducting); Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's version on EMI (GRoC, with his unrivaled Rachmaninov 4th piano concerto) is stellar and precise. Krystian Zimerman and Pierre Boulez have had the last word so far, and they give us the concerto for left hand, also. Their sparkle, their precision gives you every note and still all the excitement you could wish for. Add to that Pascal Rogé (who recently recorded the G major again, logically coupled with the Gershwin concerto, in SACD surround sound from Oehms)

well... seems our tastes are not so far apart on that concert, then...

Maybe I'll like the Haas/Paray, maybe I won't. I'm a collector of Ravel concerti, so the more interpretations I have, the better equipped I'll be to do comparisons.

P. S. Yes, our tastes are similar for these concerti. :D

Sure wish more folks felt the same way...especially about the West.  We've been overrun.  The desecration of our natural grandeur is like subdivision of a great cathedral into bedsits and cube farms.

Believe me or not, I've seen an old Utrecht church turned into a block of flats.  :o

Now, Holland and US share a fair amount of Calvinism, so maybe it's not that strange...  ;D

I believe you, sadly....   As for Calvinism in the US--sounds as if you last visited at least 150 years ago.  Things have changed a bit since.  ;)

Perhaps I spoke too soon.  Mead, as usual, makes some good points: http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,17896.msg484813.html#msg484813

As I mentioned somewhere, I've been enjoying his Beethoven Sonatas (more or less the opposite of Ravel).

LvB's sonatas are the opposite of Ravel's stuff, or you have not been enjoying this pianist's interpretations of Ravel?

Beethoven and Ravel are opposite.  I haven't heard Lortie's Ravel but I imagine it's probably good.   I just acquired a ton of Ravel piano music, or I'd be interested.
