Dived straight into the Victoria - wonderful collection, and performances on a par - and perhaps even exceeding - Ensemble Plus Ultra's earlier recordings.

That is absolutely great news. It got mentioned in The Early Music Club but I believe you're the first that got it.

BTW: since I did not notice your arrival on the forum before - a belated welcome! :)

Sergeant Rock

A few items arrived this morning; in the main purchases inspired by recent conversation in Elgar's Hillside plus another disc of Liszt, part of my quest to find the perfect Les Préludes.

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Sarge

I think I'll start my day by listening to this disc myself, good purchase, Sarge.  :)

...and two more Schnittke recordings:

I've heard good things about the two works Cello Concerto No. 2 and In Memoriam. I listened to about 15 minutes worth of Schnittke's Symphony No. 8 and found it strangely compelling. This is a symphony I didn't listen to in the BIS set I gave away. I'm going to cherry pick Schnittke recordings. Hopefully, so far, I've done good.

I like both these very well, MI. Hopefully, you will, too!

The new erato

While waiting for outstanding recordings of a few missing Handel operas, there's always room for some duplication of some of his masterworks:

What a wonderful cover BTW!

The order also included Genesis' Foxtrot.

That's a good version, but....I prefer the McGegan recording with Lieberson.   There's not nothing wrong, or even halfway wrong, about this performance, but it's simply that Lieberson was simply so much better, rather unsuprisingly.

Thanks, Karl. I can't wait to dig into them. :)

No problem, I have that. Most critics agrre with you, though finding other aspects of the Curtis recording better than McGegan.

In a classic case of one hand (or brain lobe?) not talking to the other, an online seller who I made two orders from (Amazon Marketplace, and a larger one from their own website) is sending the discs individually, in a very colourful trickle (each packaging is different).

It's funny how many Daniel Hope CDs crop off the top of his head to hide the bald spot ;D

Funny!

And (link me if this has been discussed already) . . . what's this about a new edition of the Berg Vn Cto? . . .

DavidW

I think that needs to be cross posted onto the cover thread! :D

Just as I was getting ready to leave for work today, there was a knock on the door, and there was my postwoman, sister in spirit to Sarge's ("hardest working woman in the Bundespost"), with this

from Prestoclassical.
Apparently it contains, among other things, almost everything in the Vanska box Conor ordered, except for the "original version" of Symphony No. 5.  But I'll probably start digging into it with the piano and vocal works, since those are totally unknown to me.

Trust me, that box is worth its weight in gold.

Thanks - it's good to be part of the community.  The box arrived from Presto Classical.  That delivery was probably the last to my Australian address - I'm relocating to NYC in a fortnight's time.  A whole new decision-making regime around shipping, prices, exchange rates and customs regulations awaits!

I bought another too-tedious-to-list 30 discs from the site of a marketplace saller (90 euro) - interesting how the shipping from Germany was far less than it was for my Amazon order. Can I be a consumerist whore now? Oh wait - they were second hand, I am a socialist whore.

Hehe!

Hi, would you like to share which seller that is? :) Direct ordering could save a lot in shipping! :o
