And after a few million years, I finally turn up an reasonably-priced copy of the Russian Revelation issue of Richter playing the Prokofiev 'war sonatas.'

Oh, I remember when we were trying to get rid of all these Russian Revelation discs at Tower, at $1.99 a piece, and other such ridiculous prices. Thank goodness I got all the ones I wanted, then... even though I took them reluctantly, thinking they might be 'worthless', given the low price. Many of them of course have turned out to be real gems. Those Prokofiev War Sonatas among them! What he does to the 7th... Delicious, if "delicious" goes well with gunpowder and a mouth full of blood-drenched earth.

Does anyone know if these are the same recordings?

Well it seems I am the only one on GMG that has the "de luxe" edition. Its worth every penny considering. Its a limited numbered edition.
Well, considering the deluxe edition spends most of the money on a bbok in Dutch with no translation, it may be undertandable that there are only a few of you, mainly of Dutch origin, that have it.....

You can try to work it it from the very good Richter discography:

Sorry, I don't have either of these discs to do the comparison accurately.

Totally unscientific, but just going by the timings on listed on Amazon vs. the timings listed on the Revelation CD it appears the recordings aren't the same. Some movements are quicker, some slower. There are plenty of variables of course which could account for the differences, though. So can't say for certain.

If I had the time I could try to compare the Amazon samples vs. the actual disc (even less scientific?) to see if anything stands out. Maybe later...

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Unfortunately, the Urana CDs aren't included in the discography.

This is my first Mennin CD. I may have, probably have, a Mennin LP or two buried in my LP shelves somewhere but I have no memory of it. Anyway, your comment to MI the other day ("essential American listening") prompted the purchase.

I am honored!  I meant to type essential American music listening, but I am sure you took my meaning : )

De Falla: Orchestral Works /Mata / Brilliant Classics 3CD (4 Euros)
Didn´t have these works on CD. It turns out that it doesn´t include the "Nights in the Gardens of Spain" or a complete "The 3-Cornered Hat", but a couple of other relatively rare works. Not a really revelatory set.

Got these two LPs today in very good condition for 1,25 Euros:

Debussy: Piano pieces / Magaloff / concert hall LP

Rachmaninov, Grieg: Piano Concerti / Lympany, Malko etc. /EMI LP
The Rachmaninov got very good reviews originally in Gramophone. It is conducted by Malko.

Let me stress first of all that I do not know any of the Prokofiev discs in this discussion.  I have, however, had some ghastly experiences with this Urania label - but, to be fair, also some okay ones.  Sonics can be very, very variable.  Timings can be misleading because on occasion they've been known to leave bits of a track out.  And though I have no personal experience with this, I've been told by a trusted friend that at least once their editing process resulted in a change of pitch.  (That's happened with other labels too]

I am NOT advising you not to buy it if you want it, but if there is any possible way you can find a review somewhere, or find a sucker friend who has it to hand, I advise you to scour for same before investing any serious sum.

My last couple of orders haven't arrived yet, but I had an URGE:

[ASIN]B004ZARWXE[/ASIN]Hartmann Symphonies 1-6 (EMI)
Those EMI 20th Century Classics covers are really attractive, aren't they? But no pretty cover for -

[ASIN]B0044ZQ8J4[/ASIN]Henze Symphonies 1-6 (Brilliant)

[ASIN]B0001BRO8Y[/ASIN]Durufle Requiem, 4 motets, etc. (Warner Apex)
Awesome samples, and this may well be the essential Durufle CD (BTW, the forum search engine suggested I was looking for "trifle").

[ASIN]B000W6R0GO[/ASIN]Mahler Symphonies 1, 4, 5, Lieder (label?)
These last conducted by Inbal. His 5th has been praised here, and I've also read good things about his 4th. This was the cheapest way to get them.

All ordered from Amazon UK.

The new erato

There's an ongoing Hyperion promotion in the UK with most Hyperion discs at midprice, so I ordered these as well (mdt):

[asin]B0000063BL[/asin]
[asin]B000002ZVR[/asin]
[asin]B000050X9O[/asin]

which completes the Vivaldis eries for me (having bought the remaining discs mainly on Hyperions please buy me sale).

The French Song Edition though I still lack a couple of volumes from (Duparc, Hahn); will see if I can mop them up in the remaining week of the sale.

Of course Erato my friend, you are right, the books are written in Dutch, so that is a major drawback surely! Apart from this there is a load of other info understandable to all nations. It was hard enough for the musicians to publish this, for they did it on their own costs, and I am not sure they had a profit on this. Anyway, I am deeply grateful that they embarked on this beautiful project.
