Under strong advice from some members her:

My copy landed yesterday.  Played it, and found it a strong contender, but I'm not sure it actually is better than the other two sets I have (Ashkenazy and Gutierrez).

I just have the Beroff of complete sets though of course several discs containing single concertoes by the likes of Richter and Argerich.

Excellent choice, Jansons' Tchaikovsky Cycle is absolutely beautiful. :)

I recently bought the twofer of Tchaikovsky Symphonies 4-5-6 by Kubelik and the VPO on Testament and think the performance was excellent.

The Schubert disc, is the Trout the only thing on it?

Arrived today;

The Haydn was an at-long-last replacement for a download I bought like 3 years ago. Accentus choir are excellent here, this disk is a solid challenge to my favorite oratorio version, Harnoncourt.

The Mozart is a 3 disk set on La Dolce Vita, who appear to have acquired the the catalog of the sadly defunct (by all accounts) Calliope. If you enjoy PI wind playing of some very fine music (the 'Gran Partitta' is excellent!) then this bargain re-release is a must have. I had been defeated by circumstance from acquiring the originals, but now I am satisfied at last. :)

I guess I was of the "lucky" ones to acquire the original Calliope recordings....or so to speak, because I wasn't quite taken by them. ::)

Characterfull and on period instruments, yet something odd, unidiomatic/out of sink about them.

I have a small handful of recordings by Calliope, which was a very nice small label.  I will miss the label ...

I only had the Gran Partita, I did like it quite a lot. Of course, I'm out of sync myself... :)  Anyway, they're French, you know. I think most oddities in life can be explained quite simply. ;)

Yes, I didn't have many either, since they weren't just generally available without making that extra effort to search for them. I have quite enjoyed the disks I did mange though, like the Talich Quartet's Mozart.   :)

Based on the quality of her Beethoven, I would be very interested in hearing this disc.

The Beethoven, by the way, was reissued only this year, and I completed a MusicWeb review just a few months ago, suggesting that some way or another, Calliope is still producing new CDs!

I have the two Beethoven CD's by Sodergren as well.  I first came across the following recording back in the 90's, then I got the Scarlatti ...

I only saw a short bit stating that La Dolce had bought up Calliope's catalog. It didn't say they were defunct, but that is usually the assumption one makes at that sort of statement. Perhaps they simply divested their old to finance new?

Busy this weekend, no purchasing until now (my wife's in a community theatre production and I've been helping) - but I had a few minutes, came here to see what's new, found all the fine comments about Ms. Sodergren of whom I had never heard, and couldn't resist buying yet one more Waldstein:

Cheap reseller's copy so I won't lose much if it's awful, but from what I'm seeing on this board, more purchases may well be in the offing....

Brian

A 28-minute Waldstein? Wishlisted!! I'm also wishlisting her Scarlatti. Her Beethoven Opp 109-111 is a very good CD, only marred by some glassy 1980-era sound and the worst liner note I've seen in a long time.

stopped by my usual used CD store and found a 4 CD set from Dorati's Haydn Symphony Cycle selling for only $5.99US!  Symphonies 48 to 59, too, which was good because while I have some PI recordings,  I don't have any MI performances of these ones.

To go with it, a sort of Mozart novelty on which I posted in the Mozart in Period Performances thread.

Also a Naxos CD of chamber works by Charles Wakefield Cadman, a Naxos CD of Bach's violin concertos (including Respighi's arrangement of BWV 1023 for solo violin and string orchestra (which the cover but not the track listings elevate to "Concerto in E minor") and the Rattle/CBSO recording of Prokofiev Symphony No. 5, all of these last three for $2.99US.
