Glowing reviews in the latest IRR..... :D
That looks yummy, although I don't know whether I'd go for that or Artermis Quartet's Schubert

Queyras's Bach and Faust & Melnikov's Beethoven are both awesome, and Jacobs's Mozart must be, too. (I have his 41 and Le nozze). Handel's organ concerti are nice, too - especially the instument.

I've wanted this set for a while and finally it reached a good price point so I pulled the trigger - I am thinking of buying Bernsteins new box of Mahler too but I will wait to see if I still want it tomorrow :)

Quote from: Brian on Today at 11:12:22 AM>I GOT A JOB!!! After 364 days of temping at a low hourly wage for corporate slave-drivers, I scored a permanent, salaried job working at a community college in a really great office filled with wonderful people doing terrific work. I'm moving from a cube row to an office suite overlooking a lake, and I'm also moving from my parents' upstairs bedroom to a place of my own in Dallas.

Oh and as part of my job-app process... I promised myself as a motivator that if I got a job before Presto's Harmonia Mundi sale ended, I could buy as many Harmonia Mundi CDs as I wanted, no matter the cost.

$350 later, here's what I just purchased. Definitely, positively my last music purchase of 2012, probably my last until next summer, cuz that's the most money I've ever dropped on a single order. But oh my god does it look good.

The hard to read ones are: Vivaldi double concertos (Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin), Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and Peter Serkin, Bernarda Fink sings Dvorak, Paul O'Dette plays Kapsberger lute works, Tharaud and Zhu play Schubert piano four-hands.

I was gonna also do Hyperion, but that would have cost waaaay too much money, and also the Martinu cycle came up for US$25, which is half what it goes for on Amazon.

Congratulations on your new job and purchases Brian - great news!  :D

This was available from amazon.fr for 8 Euros once, duly reported here. Of course I bought it.

A few crazy people in MI's "So I Like This Woman" thread claimed money can't buy happiness. You've just proven them wrong  ;D

Congratulations.

It sure can buy women at least. Whether that leads to happiness is pretty individual though.

Yes, really amazing. Now I just need to listen to it.  ;D

When I started in classical music on vinyl in the 70ies, Haitink was one of the great heroes, and what I have of his Bruckner, Mahler and Shostakovich still holds up well. Not a spectacular conductor, but one to let the music speak, and with good control over the orchestra..

Haha  ;D  - yes I appreciate Haitink's no-nonsense approach too and enjoy his Shostakovich and Vaughan Williams. I have the 3rd from this Cycle already and think its great so I am expecting to like the new box :)

That reminds me, I MUST get around to buying Haitink's Concertbegouw Brahms set.

Of COURSE it includes the Serenades; the amazing thing is that most of the others don't  (I think the only other one that does is Belohlavek's).

Not the kind of women you're likely to be happy with for long, though!

P.S. Confusing happiness with gratification is epidemic in our society. Perhaps one noteworthy reason we keep getting more and more insane?

Brian,

Congratulations on the job!  I, too, was out of work for more than a year and also just got a job at a community college.  I kept busy with volunteer work, and my unemployment was running out.  Right now, I'm hunting for an apartment where I'll be working (Spokane, WA).  Looking forward to it.

Tangentially, Sarge . . . friends are visiting from Oz, including a teenager who had never seen Pyscho (the subject arose when, wishing to entertain, I asked the mother if she had seen Hitchcock's trailer for the film). So we saw to emending that lacuna in the youngster's cultural education.  When Mr Cassidy is flashing the money with which he is to buy a house for his daughter, he carefully distinguishes that he is not buying happiness, but buying off unhappiness ; )

I GOT A JOB!!!

Wonderful news, Brian! Enjoy it! Moments like this (of pure and true happiness) are so few in life that this kind of commemoration was a great idea. I particularly love those Beethoven's violin sonatas and the Handel concerti by Egarr and the AAM.  :)

jo jo starbuck, congrats to you too, and best of luck - we're about to go through some big decisions, big changes, and maybe a couple shopping sprees at the furniture store, so hold on tight to your dream!

No, I didn't; I very studiously compared one-minute sound samples of every track with samples of the new Takacs version on Hyperion, before deciding that I would probably end up preferring my old Raphael Ensemble CD anyway. That said, I did like what I heard, and the cover is gorgeous, so I am sliiiightly regretting not buying it.

Congratulations on the job - wonderful news.

You got some nice discs, but I thought I would just highlight one that I have come to love. That Bach disc is really something. And the sound is something else too. Hope you enjoy it (and the rest) a whole lot!

I sampled Queyras' Bach from the library a few years ago, fell head over heels, but somehow didn't illicitly rip it to my hard drive like I should have.

Know how I can tell this was a great CD order? Everyone has a personal favorite CD in it and everyone's favorite is different. :)

Thanks all, I am really high in the clouds right now. It's just an amazing huge monumental change in my life, and yeah, I'll probably always see these CDs in my collection and know exactly when and why I bought them. :)

Queryas' Dvorak is extra special too, especially the SACD, but that's as rare as hen's teeth.

As for the job, thanks.  Our life greatly changed when I was let go of my former position.  For one, we just had to list our house and lost huge amounts of money.  We bought our house for over 270K in 2007 with 60K down.  It's now worth about 160K.  So we lost all that money, and our mortgage is still at 207K, so the mortgage company is going to have to forgive quite a bit of the money.
