Sounds as if they packaged the symphonies that spread over two CDs in folding sleeves joined at the center, so they open like a book, with the opening in the center along the fold, so the CDs must be inserted and removed across the middle of the opened sleeve, instead of from the outside edge.

Sounds right David,

Maybe Sarge will pop a picture on the site and show us the goods.

If you're interested in previewing the improved sound, Anthony, pm Scarpia and he'll send you a link for a FLAC file of the remastered first movement of the 5th. To me the improvement was dramatic and I ordered the new set immediately after hearing it.

David's right. 2, 3, and 6 & 9 are in miniature gatefolds (the other symphonies are contained in single sleeves, even the Eighth) but have to be unpacked from the middle instead of the outside edge. It's mildly aggravating but it's actually better than the horrible Bernstein Haydn box (the sleeves seem a bit looser; the discs come out a bit easier).

I do like the set though. It's an original jacket edition but considerably cheaper than some of the others (like the two Szell boxes). Haven't compared any of the performances yet to older remasterings but I will post my impression when I do.

Many thanks for doing that Sarge, much appreciated.

The set is so cheap over here in the UK that its also worth getting.

*** David, cheers also.  Will drop Scarpia a PM later....must dash, work finished for the day.

Just bought this used in like new condition for $8:

Many of these performances I don't own, so I figured it was definitely worth it.

Just bought another recording of music from Canadian composer Malcolm Forsyth:

The ENTIRE key here is how they made them with the old six-eyed Columbia!

A very cool touch.

Hurwitz hates it. Amazon's Santa Fe guy calls it a travesty.

Therefore it must be one of the best Mahler ninths on record!

Purchased after the second time hearing it via Mog. Nope, it ain't for fuddy-duddies.

Couldn't find a review on Hurwitz's site...?

Does it matter, Brian? Hurwitz has wrote tirade-laden reviews on four Norrington Mahler recordings. If these negative 'reviews' are any indication, the guy hates Norrington and this is just looking at the evidence on ClassicsToday.

I personally don't have anything against Norrington, but I don't flock to his recordings and, to be honest, I don't think I own any of his performances on CD.

Edit: I was wrong. I do have one Norrington performance on CD, the one with Joshua Bell performing Maw's Violin Concerto, which I don't think I've even listened to yet. :-\

Hey, I wanted to read it for the laughs! Also, worth pointing out Hurwitz actually loves Roger's Berlioz, SWR Beethoven, and Holst. I like the Holst album a lot too!

Go figure. Hurwitz, from my understanding, is a huge Mahler fanatic, so perhaps he was taking out his frustrations with Norrington in a review format? This is probably what happened. I don't want to get started on Hurwitz tonight. I simply don't have the time nor the energy.

Another purchase:

kishnevi

Arrived today, two Amazon MP purchases--a testimony to the vagaries of the US Postal Service, since one was mailed from Michigan on the 1st and the other four days later, on the 5th, from Kentucky:
the Nash Ensemble playing Strauss (Capriccio, Metamorphosen, etc.) and the DHM Leonhardt Plays Bach set.
(Y'all seen the CD images, so I won't bore you with them).

BTW

Heavy table pounding for not just that one but also all of Norrington's Mahler and Bruckner (with the exception of M2).
