You had as much to do with my decision as everybody else did. You said that you owned both Bernstein sets but prefer ed the DG  :) as it had symphonies that were in your opinion the "best recorded ever". This bolstered the case for the DG set  :). Thank you for that.

  marvin

PS. : I have been a member with GMG for quite some time now and I have learned to trust the many opinions that are given ESPECIALLY when there appears to be a consensus emerging.
A concensus?!?!? I think we'll have to have somebody look into that! I didn't know we had them here! :)
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

In the interest of accuracy, I think I said that some were among the best performances ever recorded. I don't know that I would call any of them the very best, but the WP 5th is certainly a contender for that title, and maybe the 2nd on this set, too. And all the rest of them (except for the 4th!) would probably make my short list of favorite half-dozen or so performances. :)

Like you, I have also learned to trust the GMG consensus, and sharply divided opinions, too, depending on who expresses them and what I know of their tastes. For instance, Jens and Sarge (again! sorry if I seem to be picking on you, guys  :-[ ) are two whose opinions I've learned to value even when I disagree with them and sometimes especially when I disagree with them, if that makes any sense. ;)

Well, it's a rare enough occurrence to merit our special attention!

Take a look at the Recordings you are Considering thread, I enquired about the differences between the set I bought and the one you bought. It was a difficult choice.

You both made the same mistake.

You should have bought BOTH sets.    :P

Went into Barnes and Noble to get this, having become intrigued by discussion of Herbie's Wolfie here.

These are the recordings from the mid-1970s.  Don't know if they are the ones included in Ilaria's set.  Will report in due course.

And of course, I couldn't walk out of there with only that one item!

I bought the last one for absolutely no reason, you know.....
Since the cover is not forthcoming--these performances were done in 2007, with Barenboim directing the Berlin Staatskapelle as well as being the soloist.
Speaking of covers--the set I have has a different cover from the one shown on Amazon--it's baby blue, with a younger woman's face to the right of LvB.

I have the Andsnes on now.  Brisk, and on the cheerful side to my ears, even in the "darker" moments.

I enjoy HvK's run of the last three, Jeffrey....it ain't Bernstein's, but still worth having IMO. :D

Wonderful, Jeffrey; I really hope you'll enjoy it! ;D If you mean the set of the Karajan Symphony Edition, I haven't got the Mozart (as well as the Haydn), I have this mid-1970s recording too.

The new erato

The postman brought me this today:

Looks like the living stereo box set is being re-released.  Outside of the US this has been stubborningly expensive.  The re-release looks a lot more reasomable.  (77 euro at time of posting at amazon.de)

So much for not buying any CDs for a while!

The new erato

Yes, but in the meantime a lot of these discs (Munch, Reiner's Strauss) has been made available in the cheap arist-led Sony Masters boxes, and more will probably come.

That's hard to find for a reasonable price. Did you splurge or find someone selling it cheap? I keep hoping Sony will box all Solomons Haydn. Maybe your purchase will finally convince them  ;D

Used for about $15, might be the cheapest I've seen it, and although I'd prefer it new, this will do. I've only had Solomon's 45/48 for awhile and I love that disc.

Did Solomon record all the symphonies?

A great price! Congratulations on finding a copy for that little!  According to Gurn's tally in the poll thread, Solomons recorded about a third (34) of the symphonies. I have four in my collection (39, 45, 48, 59) so a box would be greatly appreciated.
