One of my very favorite Naxos discs. Which, I suppose, is saying quite a bit.

Why is that, Karl?  Do you not like Naxos?  :(

Karl Henning

I think it's just the ambitions of the label (which overall, is a good thing). Especially (but not exclusively) at the start, they published a good deal more than prudent QC might have endorsed.  There are many Naxos discs which are excellent . . . and many which are rather middling.

In this post what I meant was, that because as I reflect on the matter, I actually do have a great many Naxos discs with which to be very pleased, to call this RVW disc one of my favorites does signify, rather : )

I found they recently were quite good at picking rather unknown young (often Russian) very good pianists.

I always like to learn of these successes. They go a good way towards balancing out turkeys like the Alsop/Brahms venture.

Got it for the Flos Campi  (although No.4 is no red-headed stepchild) I think Naxos has done a very good job with their RVW discs, the Job I just purchased has excellent sound, best I've heard from that piece, and Bakel's areas of the cycle are solid.

My initial thought on his comment was because of Naxos' extensive library.

Aye, as I've said afore, it was those Bakels recordings which illumined the RVW symphonies for me.

Interesting tidbit, Karl. I frequent his 7th and his speedy 9th (only finale of 9th I've heard that clocks in well under 10 minutes)

Hmm, such as whom? My favorite young pianist on the label is the excellent Ashley Wass.

Maybe I don't remember all related to the label, but from their Scarlatti series I'd name Evgeny Zarafiants, Konstantin Scherbakov, Gottlieb Wallisch. Then the piano duo Silke-Thora Matthies and Christian Köhn, and Eldar Nebolsin (Rachmaninov), maybe I'll remember a few more later.

"Young" may not be the 100% accurate word; Konstantin Scherbakov turns 50 this year. But I agree, he is excellent, and I also like Nebolsin's work. Listen to Xiayin Wang, Ashley Wass, Havard Gimse, and Christian Ihle Hadland too. :)

If nothing else, the symphony #3 (unfinished) should be worth it. It is my favorite Borodin work, but there's hardly a recording out there. I don't understand because it makes a far better filler to the Symphony #2 than the often recorded Igor Overture or Steppes of Central Asia!

The #3 is another case where my generosity cost me for the 100th time as someone borrow it and did not return it.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

:-) Indeed, 50 isn't so young any more. I didn't really distinguish between young and not-so-well-known.

"Xiayin Wang, Ashley Wass, Havard Gimse, and Christian Ihle Hadland" - noted. I have an Elgar disc by Wass, it didn't leave a great impression, but maybe that's Elgar's fault.

More Sibelius  :D

You can never have enough Sibelius in my experience. ;) I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on that Berglund set as well even though I already own the performances of the other orchestral works (i. e. tone poems) in Berglund's Helsinki box (the blue one that's OOP - EMI).

I do like that Elgar disc, but the music is pretty fluffy. Wass actually impressed me most as accompanist to Maxim Rysanov's newest viola recital on BIS, but if you like Vaughan Williams, try Wass's RVW piano concerto.

My not so strategic strike also landed, and has been occupying my CD player for the last several hours.

Also landed, the Diepenbrock box from the Etcetera label from Amazon, and the Tokyo String Quartet (1st) Beethoven cycle from IDeals, which includes the Quartet after the Piano Sonata Op. 14/1 and the String Quintet, Op. 29,  with Pinchas Zuckerman as the fifth wheel.

Doesn't the big blue box already have these symphonies?

Yes, but with the Helsinki Phil rather than Bournemouth SO.
