"French and Russian Music" yet the first composer listed is Bartok.   ;D
Hungary is almost midway between, a good enough reason to include it...

It's called "Close Enough".  ;)

Just like a Norwegian violinist friend, asked to play something Norwegian, usually suggests plenty options which are all turned down until they ask: "Can't you just play the Sibelius Concerto?"

Good choices on the Martinu, Brian. I especially love the song-cycle/Czech Rhapsody recording with Belohlavek. Quite possibly one of my favorite Martinu recordings. The song-cycles are closer to Debussy than they are to his regular Neoclassical leanings. Very impressionistic, dreamy, atmospheric. My kind of music. :)

Even better choices with the Silvestri recordings.  Silvestri is perhaps one of the greatest lesser known conductors.

Ah, a guddons, indeed. Straight off the alternative Haitink Bruckner cycle, huh!?  ;)

Ironically, just ordered his 6th yesterday. I see it made your list.

It's the only non-SACD on that list, but it resides atop... just a hair's breadth ahead of the Seventh, followed by Five, followed by Eight, followed by Four. Or maybe Four, then Eight. I decidedly need to listen to the Fourth again. Also: Surely not ironically, but (co)incidentally, right?  ;)

Arrived this morning, lots of Stokowski, including Mahler 2 and Vaughan Williams 8:

Sarge

Three marvellous CDs of days gone by.  The live concert disc of Brahms 4 etc cost £2.50 to £0.40p for seats in 1974 to attend.  Forty pennies to watch and listen to Stoki, amazing!!!

Great bargain box, fine Mahler. Exciting Brahms, fast intreaguing Shosty 5, suave RVW 8 and a indulgent Tallis Theme to dream along to.

There is also a Janet Baker BBC Legends set from Naxos Direct at the same price, three great concert / recitals.

Too much to listen too now! Just acquired all 4 Celibidache EMI sets at really cheap prices.  :D

Nice! My favorite Tchaikovsky symphony set bar none.

The new erato

A good friend of mine - now too early dead unfortunately - played in the violin section on that recording.

I should have credited you with the recommendation in my original post. After seeing your post in the bargain thread, I ordered through an Amazon DE seller (zweitausendeins)--a bit more expensive but still next to nothing. I've only heard the RVW8 so far...what a unique reading. Left me with a huge grin.

Seems to be a common effect by Stokowski.

Just listening to the DSCH 5th now.  After you hear this, tell me how an orchestra can play this fast in the finale?  Without losing cohesion? Or consciousness?....It's truly unbelievable.  Another huge grin to follow, Sarge!

I just bought the lossless download of the new up and coming (March 1st) Atterberg / Neeme Jarvi album.  I will buy the album proper in March.  Sorry the pic isn't very big.

It is Volume One, so more to come!   ;) ;D ;D

And wait until you hear the Scherzo alla marcia of Stokie's VW8: he and the BBC dispatch it in less than three minutes. Damn the cohesion, full speed ahead  :D
