Thumbs up on the Martinu Thomson set! A great set. I don't like Solti's Elgar recordings. I don't think he understands this music very well. I like a broader approach to tempi in Elgar's symphonies like Andrew Davis' Philharmonia performances. Those are my new gold standard for those works.

Solti's Elgar can be had very, very cheaply nowadays, and I'm glad I spent the $7 and listened to his set, because it was informative and really taught me a lot about how I like the Elgar symphonies to be played. Which is indeed, not like Solti.  :D

But seriously, they're somehow... they're interpretations I disagreed with, in a way which was constructive for me as a person attempting to understand Elgar. They help clarify what I'm looking for. I'll give Solti another few listens, in comparison to others.

I think Solti is as overrated as HvK (sorry Ilaria), although HvK has a better track record with me. Solti was great in Bartok, decent in Mahler, horrible in Bruckner, clueless in Elgar, and surprisingly good in Brahms. I never cared much for his Wagner either. :)

Eased the withdrawal pains from GMG being down earlier this evening with a purchase at Arkivmusic

I'm assuming Feltsman skips the repeats in the Partitas, since Arkiv lists it as a single CD.

And I ordered these off Amazon in the last couple of days, but didn't get around to posting them here.

The Schubert is still listed by Amazon at $9.99, btw.

Two Dudamel purchases? I hope you bought plenty of Pepto-Bismol. ;) :D

I'm sure Mahler will survive.  And even the best Mahler conductor can produce a DVD flop.  (I'm thinking of Chailly's Liepzig 8th, which I think flopped--and strangely enough,  the DVD of the Second, performed within a few days of the Eighth, is a wonderful performance.)  But at least one GMG member spoke positively about the LA performances of the Eighth, so my fingers are crossed.

The Ninth is pure speculation....I have no idea of how that will turn out...

Of course, I was joking. :) I have no idea how Dudamel is in Mahler nor am I particularly interested because my Dad is the Mahler fan of the household. I did go through a Mahler phase last year where I listened to all of the symphonies in random order. That was pretty fun actually and it seems like Abbado, Bernstein, and, strangely enough, Haitink came out the winners. I have a sudden urge to listen to Mahler's 4th...I'm not sure why.

Don't be surprised to open up Feltsman's Partitas and find more than one disc.

I see you have the other Philip Glass on harp disc. Watched some of Sacchi's videos on YouTube, she's good.

strong second on the Gli Incogniti recording.
Relevant to Zig Zag, there's a good HIP recording of the clarinet quintet on that label, although I'm too lazy to go find it amid my CD racks, so I can't tell you who the performers are.

I have to say that "Piano pieces you probably don't have" sounds like a great title for a CD series.

Well, Mirror Image wins: I grabbed a $6 "Used - Good" copy of Tilson Thomas's Janacek Glagolitic Mass.

I will look up the Mozart on Zig Zag on NML to compare it with this new recording, thanks. And in the case of the Prokofiev, a lot of it is really rarely recorded - like the fragmentary Tenth Sonata and the teenage Pieces.

Happy to hear you bought this, Brian, but not happy to hear about the condition you bought it in. :(

I thought you said these performances were 'underpowered'? Change of heart?
