(Listed here on the premise that Monk qualifies on any short list of "classic" music.)

Until now,  I have had absolutely no jazz in my CD collection, and this seemed like a good start on remedying that.

Jazz has been a love of mine for 15 years. I don't listen to it much these days, but it's still music I'm extremely proud to have developed an ear for. Thelonious Monk took me a little time to appreciate because his style is so singular, but when I finally made a connection, he hit me in a huge way as did Miles and Bill Evans. These guys were masters of their craft and created beautiful music.

Well, Mirror Image wins: I grabbed a $6 "Used - Good" copy of Tilson Thomas's Janacek Glagolitic Mass.

For anyone who wants a new copy (of the later reissue edition) of that MTT/Janacek MASS, it can be had for under US$10 (including shipping to the USA from UK) here:

though I only saw a couple copies left when I checked just now.

Re: Thelonious Monk: he's so marvelous; he only becomes more and more unique as others play his tunes and try to imitate his approach.  One musician who I think does honor to Monk by way of departure is Alexander von Schlippenbach, mainly known as a European free-improviser (and long-term collaborator of the great saxophonist Evan Parker), though he studied with Bernd Alois Zimmermann and is a composer in his own right.  His solo piano improvisation can sound like a mashup of serialism and Monk.  He also recorded all [?] of Monk's published compositions in a 3cd set called MONK'S CASINO; it's been quite a while since I've heard it, but I remember liking it well enough, and I liked that it was not a "repertory" take on Monk's music replete with the whiff of formaldehyde....I think the PENGUIN JAZZ GUIDE guys liked much more and maybe even gave it their coveted superlative "crown" rating.
EDIT: Yes they did:
http://www.tomhull.com/ocston/nm/notes/pjazz-crown.php

Also, if you have not heard Monk's solo-piano ALONE IN SAN FRANCISCO, that is almost certainly one of my very few favorites from him.

Ah, but thread duty; I'm sorry to say I ran into a really good deal and hadn't the guts to refuse it:

WHAT. Okay. I didn't either until a few months ago. Here are a few things to know about your jazz collection beginnings.

1. There are several other Original Album Classics sets bundling together 5 albums for $14-18. These include two from Dave Brubeck, one from Charles Mingus, and I think Duke Ellington, Aretha Franklin and Louis Armstrong.
2. There's an amazing box set called "Perfect Jazz Collection." For about $45-50, you get 25 all-time classic jazz albums in little reproductions of the original vinyl front/back covers, from Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker to Wynton Marsalis. After years of only owning "Time Out" and "Kind of Blue" and no other jazz, I bought this box last year and resolved to listen in order through the whole thing. I finally finished yesterday and it has been an amazing experience. There are people I now love and can't wait to hear again whom I'd never heard of. And there's a "Perfect Jazz Collection 2" and a "Perfect Miles Davis Collection" at about the same price. I ordered the Miles Davis box set last night.

These two boxes are indeed great places to start.

Villa-Lobos - Piano Music w/ Sonia Rubinsky - 8 CD box; unfortunately (like CPO & unlike Naxos), each disc comes in its own jewel box, so not a space saver; BUT, I'll use the CD sleeves from Jazz Loft, which will occupy the space of just 2 jewel boxes - looking forward to this set - superb reviews reprinted HERE - :)

I need to dig this set back out myself and give some of the recordings a whirl. It really is a great set. We're not spoilt for choices in VL but at least there have been some great recordings made of his music and to have a "complete" anything with any part of his oeuvre is a blessing I think.

Hi John - yep, those ClassicsToday reviews are 10/10 (and even from Jed D.!) - now I have not yet bought into V-L's Symphonies - of course, these works are not considered 'top drawer' for this composer now have there been many recordings, BUT anything 'new' to possibly consider?  Thanks - Dave :)

VL's symphonies may not be considered high marks of his oeuvre, but I think highly of them. Symphonies 4 & 6 I consider masterworks. I enjoy the rest of the cycle is just as enjoyable. I would definitely pickup St. Clair's set on CPO if you can get it for a good price.

Eased the withdrawal pains from GMG being down earlier this evening with a purchase at Arkivmusic

I'm assuming Feltsman skips the repeats in the Partitas, since Arkiv lists it as a single CD.

And I ordered these off Amazon in the last couple of days, but didn't get around to posting them here.

The Schubert is still listed by Amazon at $9.99, btw.

I did not share the withdrawal problem since I was busy reading/putting up posts at another forum on computer, audio equipments, dogs and finance, etc ...   ;D

At that price, this will not qualify as "impulse purchase" per GMG house rules. This is a prompt wise purchase.

Nice haul. :) I'd like to hear your thoughts on that Weinberg once you hear it. The Shostakovich 7th with Nelsons is pretty good, but Lenny still reigns supreme here for me. Good to see you giving Steve Reich a fair shake. Are you a fan of his music or will this set be your introduction to his music? The Rachmaninov is, by all standards, still one of the finest cycles available.

Thanks for all the responses about Jazz.  I've wishlisted the Perfert Jazz Collection boxes, the Miles Davis box, and the Perfect Blues Collection box--though truth to tell it will probably be a bit before I act on the suggestions*.  Mount Listen To is already piled high with boxes waiting their turn in the CD player.

I think the Monk solo album Octave mentioned is part of the set I ordered, but I'll have to wait for it to land before I can confirm it.

This one is a superb disc.  :)

Is there a Goebel/MAK recording that isn't good?

*Of course the last time I said it would be a bit before I bought an item,  I bought it an hour later or less, as part of the Beethoven binge of a couple of weeks ago.

I don't know, it depends, I guess. In my opinion virtuosic German repertoire from the XVII Century is ideal for them. On the other hand, his Bach and recordings of French repertory seem more debatable. But it's just my opinion.

I hear ya. I probably have a hundred discs waiting their turn, if box sets are counted per CD. So when I discovered that my daily commute (45 minutes' driving round trip, if I choose to drive instead of take the train) divided pretty much cleanly into A and B sides of all those classic jazz albums, it was clear what I had to do to listen to all of them. :)

I have the Different Trains CD with the Kronos quartet, which I really like.  I have music for 18 musicians, just haven't listened to it yet
