More! Today is one of those rare occasions when I get to splurge.

Inspired by the Sibelius thread.

I don't have any Weber and I've heard good things about his works for clarinet.

First complete set of Scriabin sonatas (I have most of them from other recordings).

Complements the disc with the 1st and 3rd quartets.

Nice call on the Maggini Quartet disc, Corey. I really love their love - haven't heard a recording of theirs that I didn't like. :)

Incidentally (and now that we're 3265 posts on), shouldn't this thread properly be on the Great Recordings board?

Would that make every recording a great recording?  ;)

No.

There wasn't much tempting material at the local Borders, so I picked up the Brahms symphonies from Alsop.  Now I'll know what stinks about them (if all the negative chatter is on target).

You think every recording discussed on the other board is great. I'd beg to differ.

No.

But it's about recordings, right? I'm surprised Lis hasn't moved it, TBH. ::)

These arrived in the post today:

I've only listened to the Ancerl so far. Wow! I love the Glagolitic Mass - that mad organ and those robust soprano voices.

Mahler 7, I've had difficulty in the past with. I'm hoping to see how I go with Abbado and the CSO.

Moravec and Chopin ... need I say more? 0:)

It's probably because I read the biased British press (that old chestnut), but I've not heard any 'negative chatter' about Alsop's cycle. Most reviewers have generally given it a 'thumbs up'. ???

after hearing this, you really get a sense of how overused terms like "master" and "expert" and "musician" are (not to mention genius). Technique and insight like what you'll hear come along once a generation.

Not really.  It's about the acquisition obsession, one that I fully possess.

Move an icon??

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

sidoze - thanks for that, now I am truly excited for the disc to get here.

For a "one thumb up, one thumb down" assessment my reviews are probably a good start: Second, Third, Fourth (and summary of first three). Or here's a summary: I called the First "special" and "truly top-rank", the Second "slow and painful" and a case of "artistic narcolepsy", the Third "the kind of recording which makes me picture Brahms as a charmless, emotionless old codger", and the Fourth "a general success, and almost a great one." My summary was that Ms. Alsop delivered 1.5 great performances out of 4.

Fair enough. That answer satisfies.
