Henk, I'd be eager to hear your comments on the Gerhard, since I have two others in the series.  The one with the Symphony No. 3 "Collages" is great...

Just got this new disc of Martinů Cello Sonatas yesterday.

I've heard that Gerhard disc. I think the Concerto for Orchestra is great--one of his finest works in a virtuoso performance--but I find the 2nd symphony a bit dry: it's transitional between his mainstream serial period and his final period and it lacks the colour and immediate impact of his best works in either period.

I'm listening to a recording by Jiri Barta of Kodaly's solo cello sonata and the sonata for cello and piano. Great stuff, and the coupling (Novak's cello/piano sonata) is an intriguing rarity.

Thanks for the Gerhard comment--actually it would be great to discover another wonderful Concerto for Orchestra!

And the Koday/Novak sounds right up my alley, too.

His Beethoven and Brahms are an acquired taste, I think.

Q

Really? I've always had a fondness for his Brahms that I suspected to be mainly personal, but I consider his Beethoven quite phenomenal. Though phenomenally quirky as well, I suppose! :)

I meant that his LvB and Brahms is a somewhat of a re-creation IMO, Mengelberg was after all quite an interventionistic conductor. Which is be no means downgrading it, BTW. :)

After enough recommendations here I finally bit the bullet and ordered this.  I love Lenny's earlier NYPO symphony cycle, but fear these late, reputedly extremely indulgent performances will benefit Sibelius about as much as more lawyers in government will benefit our national welfare--especially since the Amazon reviewer from Santa Fe with consistently awful taste likes it (but even a stopped clock etc.)--but enough good guys here have praised it and, besides, you can never have too many Sibelius discs!
