Dancing Divertimentian

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

I definitely prefer the Kaspszyk recording pictured below to the Rattle one - in more ways than one (better soloists, prefer the choir & orchestra, better diction! $:)):

This one was my first choice, but it was hard to acquire and would've cost about three times the Rattle 4CD set. If I see it, I'll still pick it up, as one recording isn't enough for any mature Szymanowski that I know. ;)

I took my 40% off coupon to Borders today, expecting to be disappointed, but I did find this:

Skip Sempe playing Scarlatti, which I had actually been looking for.

Great news! I was thinking of going, but didn't. There's still tomorrow.

This was the San Diego Mission Valley Borders, which is one of the better ones in SD for CDs, though that's not saying much.

There were a few more things there that looked mildly interesting: a couple Lyrita CDs, Litton's Ives, the new Hyperion Martinu violin music series.  But I decided that I didn't really need to fill my quota of 3 CDs.  I think perusing my monotonically decreasing bank account recently may have something to do with this brief fit of restraint.

Loving the juxtaposition of these pictures:

Good morning Andrei

The Tchaikovsky is in my ears great, very much so, wonderful choice.
I am really interested in your findings.

Will report, no doubt.

I do, too. You can't go wrong with this one. On top of everything, this interpretation manages to exude the score's aura of mysticism in ways most of which elude Rattle.

Excellent choices, Andrei; especially the Lupu set. The First from Karajan's set is a particular favourite of mine.

That's a great set, Florestan.

I particularly like Lupu's D894; makes a lovely contrast to my other favourite, Richter's.

Wow, this is as close to a consensus as GMG ever gets :P. Looks like the Kaspszyk is the one to have :).

Considering Sarge & M's praise for the Kremer Glass VC, and spurred to action by an Amazon reviewer who appears to be a complete idiot, I ordered this, hoping the Rorem coupling will prove more to my liking than the Schnittke:

He is an idiot — the worst kind of academic you could think of who only listens to music if there is some sort of pseudoscientific process involved in its creation. I believe he also posted some moronic comments here on the Rautavaara thread.
