Thanks to some gift cards, I was able to pick these up for (drum roll, please) ... $0.35.

Last purchases for a while. I figure I should actually listen to some music, too!

The sleeves are LP case replicas, right down to the print on the backside. The sound is an upgrade as well. The price is cheap and it takes up a lot less space than the single discs do. You could easily resell your original CDs and have enough to pay for the set. That enough reasons?  ;D

Yep, you're right. Ordered!

From MediaMarkt (a large German electronics and media chain): I bought the Strauss primarily to hear what Thielemann does with the songs;

I'm still waiting to hear that... Should be a grand romantic lollipop.

...purchased the Mahler primarily to hear Helen Donath, a favorite soprano from my youth.

Definitely one of my favorite Fourths. Schaefer/Haitink/RCO may have overtaken it now, but a superb choice and in any case unbeatable for the super-budget price.

It is quite sweet and delicious  ;) especially the four songs Verführung, Freundliche Vision, Winterweihe and Zueignung and the aria from Die ägyptische Helena (a really grand way to end the disc). This new Vier letzte Lieder is a minor disappointment though. She was in better voice for Eschenbach and I prefer his accompaniment. He takes slower tempos than Thielemann (considerably slower actually) and indulges his singer, seemingly letting her lead. The songs are really caressed. I love the results--one of my favorite Four Last Songs.

You may have put the idea into my head (have you mentioned this recording at Ionarts?). Someone I read online praised Inbal's Fourth. When I saw it in MediaMarkt at that absurdly low price, well...a no-brainer of a purchase. It is a great performance but doesn't knock my long time favorite (Maazel/Battle/WP) from its lofty perch.

Scarcely a day goes by without me mentioning it.  ;D
Maazel/Battle is deserving of a lofty perch, too. For precisely the reasons why I don't like the Abbado/Fleming 4th, this is one of the great recordings. Battle's birdy-voice well matches the text and (presumably) Mahler's intention. Perhaps Strauss was so fond of that particular symphony because of the beautiful soprano part?!

Ah, then it must have been you  ;) Thanks for the recommendation.

Undoubtedly--for the man knew his sopranos. Yes, Battle's contribution is crucial. I think she has the ideal voice for this music. I love her sound, so unique and beautiful, and instantly recognizable. But I also have nothing but praise for Maazel. His Mahler can be bizarre but the interventionist approach works well in this symphony. And the heavenly length of his last movement is just right IMO. Heaven is about eternity after all  ;)

I couldn't resist picking this up while it was on sale!

I remember really liking the Prelude in D when I first heard it several years back, so I figured I might as well add this disc to the growing collection. Anyone else have this disc?

Interesting. They are repeating what they did in Berlin two years ago during Easter? What orchestra? Barenboim's Staatskapelle or the New York Phil?

SK Berlin.  And I already marked off the time of all of the Sunday performances which start at 2 PM.  ;)

Ah, sorry not to have replied. That question had escaped me. Yes, thank heavens not the NYP but the StKB. :-)

Although what would be nice is a meeting of four, five orchestras, each doing a few. My dream: Berlin Phil (Simon will do), Concertgebouw (under Haitinki, not Jansons), Cleveland O (since I just changed my mind on the NYP, I can have Boulez here), New York Phil (only if they promise to be energized! Maybe under Boulez. No... under Muti!), and Leipzig Gewandhaus (Chailly, I ♥ you!) in a Transatlantic Mahlerfest. That will include two of the four great Mahler Orchestras (Munich Phil and Vienna Phil I've already heard in Mahler, and the former has let its Mahler-history fall by the wayside, anyway) and plenty excitement. Not that I'm not sufficiently looking forward to the StKB, of course.

Not for the 4th!  I've seen that one with the BP and his gf (Magdalena Kozena) singing (terribly miscast, her voice is not suitable at all).

He did quite well for DLVE (Heppner and Quastoff), though.

Well, have not received them yet, but my first significant order since 2002 has been shipped. I figured I'd post them now!

Ein leiser Ton gezogen

I just acquire this recording of some of John Rutter's orchestral music -- I haven't listened to it yet.  In fact, I haven't heard any of this music before, only some of Rutter's choral works which suffer from "saccharin religiousity" (to quote myself).

Anyway, I'll see about this stuff, conducted by Rutter and played by the Royal Philharmonic, et al.

Distant Land (A Prayer for Freedom), for chorus
Five Meditations for Orchestra
Suite for Strings
Suite Antique (for flute, harpsichord & strings)
Beatles Concerto, for 2 pianos & orchestra

While some of those items are double discs, also a few were orders for our other member squarez. So mine is probably around 80 or so. That means 11 or 12 per year, or one per month. That is a very low number (considering before that I usually purchase about 300 to 600 a year. Oh liberty of being single...)

I think I've found a nice bedtime read. :D

But scanning through the list I noticed that you'd gotten some Hyperion discs for a lesser price than some EMI Angels. Are these all new?

They are all ordered from Berkshire. Yes, they are all new.

I'm borrowing the Maazel-conducted Sibelius, Symphonies nos. 2 and 6 with the PSO also the Blomstedt-conducted Strauss Alpensinfonie.

You bought more discs in one go, then I will buy this year, so my crown is yours Paul
It was too heavy anyway. ;D
