Cortot is wonderful in the Carnaval, included in the Phillips set of 20th century pianists.
Arrau is pretty impressive in that work. The earlier and later films are available on youtube.

But for me Rachmaninoff is the absolute summit.

A little scratchy from 78's, but he gives a more accurate reading of the score than those who who are liberal with their own interpolations. The quick tempi are absolutely fearless with equal speed and accuracy.

Try Richter for the PC, quite incredible...

ZB

ZB, I also really like the Rachmaninoff; it is, as you say, fearless and audacious (although I don't know the score well enough to say anything about accuracy). What really works for me is his 'Chiarina,' perhaps my favourite section which is probably why I take particular notice - IMHO Rachmaninoff gets it just right: he articulates the rhythms without making them jerky; generates agitation and passion without being excessively rushed.

I have not heard Richter's PC - thanks for the recommendation. Is that the DG recording with Rowicki? I'll have to get hold of that one day. I don't seem to listen to the piece a lot these days though. Loved it when I first started getting interested in classical, but I seem to have moved away to the solo piano repertoire. Mind you, the PC gets programmed a lot around here. I'm hearing it twice this coming season :).

As do I. 8) And what a sumptuous tour de force, your latest purchase.

Did you get anything else for free with it, as a sign of the vendor's profound admiration for your taste?

Regarding the Gulda Amadeo cycle that you ordered (good choice!:-): there's a reissue by Decca as well that also includes the piano concertos (with Stein conducting).

Both the Brilliant and Decca incarnations are more or less in the same price range. Just thought I'd mention it.  8)

Let us know how you like Maazel's Mahler. Segerstam's Sibelius is uniformly excellent.

I've seen quite a few of these Eloquence boxes online, recently. (Most notably, Schiff's Bach (solo) and a Brendel box.) However, I can only find them in some European stores who either don't ship to where I live or ask for a large shipping fee. Does anyone know when these can be expected to hit the American or U.K. market?

That Gulda Eloquence set is not a new release (I bought it more than 2 years ago). Chances are if it hasn't already appeared in the US of A it never will (or maybe it did appear and it's going slowly out of print?).

That's a bummer. :(

EDIT: There is still some hope. The sets I mentioned in my previous post were released only last year.

Wouldn't it be funny if Harry recognizes that "Chinese Theme"?

The symphonies are very impressive, the other works less so(if I recall correctly-nothing stuck in my mind). Excellent performances by Handley. And now we have the forthcoming Hickox/Chandos performances with which to compare.

Was surprised to see amazon.de regularly listing Chambonnieres, they haven't had it for ages and used copies are 50 euros and up. Price is 7 euros and availability 9-11 days for dispatch, let's hope they actually have it.
