From the post office today - this dodgy Rozhdestvensky "Swan Lake":

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

I don't usually buy this kind of reviews-led book, but it was half price at my local Waterstones book shop (£10) - not bad, seeing as it was only published about a week ago. I intend to use it more as a means to exploring works of which I've previously not heard, or those I've been thinking about getting ... but then forgot, as I went off and bought something else. ;D At any rate, it carries recommendations by one or two reviewers whose opinions I've come to respect.

I'm no expert on early music, but I've really enjoyed both of these.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."

I have both of these. I'm going to wager that you'll prefer the Dufay - groundbreaking in its own time.

A very interesting addition to my collection today; some of Prokofievs symphonies conducted by Rozhdestvensky (on Melodiya) :):

Is that an out of print RCA/Melodiya?

The Melodiya CD is sadly OOP, but I found it at amazon.co.uk marketplace. However, the complete set is available from HMV Japan on the label Venezia. I think Venezia's transfers are inferior to Melodiya's, but still it's the only complete set of Rozhdestvensky's Prokofiev.

Thanks, George! I follow many of your recommendations, as we seem to have something in common taste-wise :). The difference is you're more heavily into piano music than me. My most beloved area is orchestral music.

Then I shall look you up when I need an orchestral recommendation.  :)

Cheap and high quality music, including the Ritirata Notturna Di Madrid. By the way Berio has also recorded his own version of this piece. It's on this cd:

Haven't listened to it, but have heard great things about it.
